Metformin can help you lose weight. It is VERY difficult for women with PCOS to lose weight because our bodies work against us (I wont bore you with the technical medial explanation behind this..but it's true). However, if you are correctly treating the PCOS, then it is much easier.

      It is important to really understand what PCOS is and the correct way to treat it. Unfortunatly, many doctors are not very knowledgeable and do not really understand much about PCOS. I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). They are your best bet at correct PCOS treatment and any fertility treatments you may need. Here's a little general PCOS info to get you started:

      The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:

      1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.

      2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.

      3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated. Hopefully you will start ovulating on your own and you will be able to get pregnant without any other treatment needed. If not, the RE can begin other fertility treatments while you are still on metformin.

      4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.

      When I was dieting (and believe me I still watch my weight even though I have achieved my weight loss goals for the most part) I realized right off that the most important thing is to control your appetite. If your stomach's not always growling and your not always craving food it is sooo much easier to stick to your guns and stay on your diet. With hoodia I would literally go a whole day sometimes and simply forget to eat and I didn't get tired and run down like diets can sometimes make you feel. Once my appetite was under control and I wasn't always thinking about eating then and only then could the weight start coming off consistently and steadily because the hoodia kept my mind off of food and I would go longer on my diet and as I did that naturally I lost weight. You have to remember that consistency is very important when losing weight. If you cut back a little on your food consumption everyday your body will change (stomach will shrink and you won't be eating as much) and with that consistency over a few days, weeks and months you will lose weight just like I did.       Don't take any pills. As a mother, you need to BE healthy, not just look healthy. Weight loss pills aren't good for you in the long-term.

    I am really wanting to loss some weight...like most women.

    Someone I know started losing weight so I asked her what she was doing. She showed me a little bottle of HCG and told me what pharmacy she buys it from. I have always been against weight loss supplements and so I just decided not to look into it.

    So it became a weight loss aid but the FDA only approved it for a fertility drug.

    Problem: I am sexually active. Currently taking birth control pills..though I plan on going back to condoms soon.

      Eat 4-5 times daily but eat smaller portions of food. And always, eat breakfast. That is the most important meal. Because your digestive system must start in the morning. After at least 2 meals take easy 20 minute walk or easy exercise. Do not workout hard after the meals.     I've been packing on weight since i stopped having a very active lifestyle (run 5 km every day and go to the gym every second week, walk everywhere).
    I'm now 27 yrs old and have cellulite on my posterior thighs (I'm 5'2' or 160 cm tall and weigh about 126 lbs or ~56 kgs).
    I've been going to the gym like 4 times a week, but i've been inconsistent with my workouts (didn't do the exact same machines every day, but tried to do the same reps with the same weight)
    1) does the cellulite show more when you lose weight? because i think i've lost the puffy fat and now i have ugly dimples (the older fat) on my legs
    2)stupid question: can i really prevent stretch marks? i try putting lotions on with cocoa butter, but now i have stretch marks too.
    3) what workouts have done wonders to your body? fat-loss and toning exercises examples?
    4) do you guys do cardio before or after lifting weights?

      Firstly you do not have to stop having an active lifestyle nor go to the gym, a walk or jog around your area every second day will suffice

      1) No it will not, i'm not sure exactly what you are on about but the ugly dimples are probably just where your legs still have a certain degree of fat on them. That being said 56Kg is a normal weight for a woman, so the problem could well just be untoned muscle
      2) Male, not a clue. I presume there are ways & many scams out there
      3) jogging, all you need alongside a healthy diet
      4) when i do lift weights i jog previous, no specific reason why i just like to get the cardio out of the way rather than when i'm fatigued from lifting.
      5) Chances are you already are attractive, studies show women up-size themselves 15% when looking in mirrors despite when shown 3d images being able to guess their size relatively accurate
      6) I don't use supplements bar the odd multi-vitamin like any meat-eater. All the nutrition i need is in my vegetarian diet, it is very likely if you are eating meat & a decent diet that you are well above the protein requirement (daily & necessary to build muscle) + whey protein is only used after heavy workout, excess protein is pretty high in calories bested only by fat. Why have a carb drink when you can just eat a grain cereal like muesli? Better nutrition + carbs at a much cheaper price

      I question if the creatine your friend used was solely responsible for her weight loss. Was she also dieting and exercising well? Creatine is known to cause water retention- ideally within muscles, thus boosting muscle size and endurance, but it also settles into your body tissues overall. In fact, to really get the full benefit of creatine you need to drink at least 12-16 glasses of water every day. This is not really viewed as a weight loss supplement. It is definitely good for building muscle mass. I think your are saying you don't want that. You also won't want the added weight from water retention. Lifting weights and your running regimen along with reasonable eating habits is the way to go. Sounds like you are doing that. There is a lot of really good info out there if you do a google on 'creatine women'. If you decide to take it you want to gear it to your female body weight so you're not dosing like a man would do which can cause some unpleasant, though not common side effects. Just sounds like you are already on the right track and need to give yourself some time. And by the way, don't know what kind of strength training you do but if you skip the machines, for the most part and work the free weights as hard as you can you'll get better benefit and you won't bulk up- just tone beautifully.

    Serious weight loss question?
    First off, I do not want to hear "diet and exercise are the only ways....etc etc.." Im a biology major and Im not stupid, Im not asing for a miracle weight loss pill.

    I am currently trying to lose weight and as the first step I bought a Wii. (I dont live close to any gyms and get easily bored with the same workout dvd things over and over again and since its in the 90s and up in the summer here going outside and walking is not even an option. I got the My Fitness Coach thing for the Wii as well as Wii sports that came with it and have started those workouts doing anywhere from 30-60 minute workouts 5 days a week with rest days in between. I also have started eating soo much healthier than I used to (being just out of college). I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, oatmeal, cottage cheese, low fat snacks like reduced fat wheat thins, etc. I do not eat alot of protein (I hate cooking meat for myself) so I do plan on getting a protein shake mix or something to supplement that, as well as a fiber supplement, like benefiber. My main problem is I feel as if I have a slow metabolism and that I dont have enough energy, Im only 22, I should have tons of energy but due to stress from previous relationships, family problems and school problems Ive gotten to the point where I am constantly lazy and have no desire to do alot, and the fact that there is nothing to do around the house (another reason for getting the Wii).

    What is a good weight loss supplement, not something that is supposed to make you skinny just from taking it, I know those are all fakes, but just something that will actually boost energy and reduce my wanting to eat when Im bored.     I am inquiring about a weight loss surgery as a last resort. I have literally tried every stupid diet, stupid weight loss supplements and shakes, proper dieting and excercising, but that's very hard for me to keep up on. There seems to be nothing really working out for me.

    I am not an incredbily obese woman. I was just got weighed today at my gynecology appointment, and to my disappointment I found out I weigh 181 pounds and I am 5 feet 7 inches. I just checked out a BMI calculator and it told me my index is 28.3. According to the key, I am overweight but I'm not taking too much stock in that... That's just what it's telling me.

    I really don't look like I weigh that much, but apparently I do and it's such a fucking bummer to me. I don't know what else to do, and I just want some help. It's hard changing your diet when no one else in your household really gives a damn about planning meals and preparing food the healthy way. I can't go out and buy separate groceries when I have so much to pay for myself, so I just what my mom makes because it's more convenient for me. I find excercising very off-putting but I try to do it, apart from my job; I'm a housekeeper and I'm always on the move but there's not much exertion coming out of that. It helps, I'm sure... but more could be done, and without a friend (which I sort of have none of in this city anymore) it's tough to keep going when I find things getting difficult.

    I don't feel that I'm at risk for any diseases that would require me to get a weight loss surgery, but I feel like I'm at my wits end.

    I'm asking anyone with knowledge on this matter, either from personal experience or from expert (ish) knowledge. I just need some guidance. I'm 21 years old, but I don't really think age is a huge factor in play on this subject. Just don't know what to doooo...

However, I thought that this one might be a good idea because since I don't eat much, and it's a multivitamin for women, it would give me the things that I don't get from food as well.

    However, a metabolism booster is my main goal. So if you know something other than this that boosts the metabolism, then please tell me, and I will get a more simple multivitamin to go along.

      That is a supplement. Just like all the other tons of "fat loss, energy booster" products it is only a supplement. Exercise and proper diet is a must before you can even consider these types of pills to work with your body. You dont have to eat 1000 calories of fruits (id probably puke if i tried) just dont eat over a certain calorie number. To be honest, i ate barely any fruits and veggies, but i lost nearly 50 pounds so far. Thats because i set a calorie limit of no more than 2000 a day no matter what, and i exercised 5 times per week.

      So if you try these pills or any other for weight loss, set a calorie limit, and exercise. It wont work on its own.

      Diet pills don't work. Cutting calories and exercising (more vigorously than you have been, if you've hit a plateau) are the only things that will work.

      I like New Chapter. They are food based and their processing preserves much of the nutrients. They also don't pack a ton of cellulose in there, which makes it difficult for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients.

      My second most favorite vitamin is made by Rainbow Light.

      As far as weight loss goes, here are some tips, but you may already be doing these.
      - Eat 3 hours or more before going to bed
      - Don't push your workouts too hard. Over training the body can lead to an increase in cortisol, which can result in fat accumulation in the mid section.
      - Eat plenty of vegetables. When you are hungry for a snack reach for a veggie!
      - Get at least 8 hours of sleep. This is also related to cortisol.
      - Eat ample protein, but not in excess. A general rule is your body weight in kg (lbs/2.2=kg) x 0.08= # grams of protein to eat daily.
      - Be sure to weight train and hit the cardio.

      Of course, if any of this goes against what a doctor has told you then you should listen to your doctor first.

      Many vitamins participate as co-enzymes in body and help to metabolize fat. For example, if you wish to burn fat you absolutely need niacin and riboflavin to be able to do this. Vitamins E and C act as antioxidants and fight free radicals. When we exercise we create free radicals, so these are also important. It is also recommended that women take 400mcg of folate every day and take in extra calcium because we don't necessarily get everything we need from our food. Ideally, if you eat a perfect diet you would get all your nutrients, but you'd also need to have ideal absorption as well. Of course, you can not take vitamins alone and expect to lose weight, but they will help you in attaining optimal health if they are part of an overall healthy lifestyle (diet and exercise).

      Focus more on your health rather than your weight because having excess weight (particularly on the abdomen) can lead to health problems. If you take care of your health you should hopefully feel fitter and happier, and you might lose a little weight as a bonus. So healthy eating and exercise is what to aim for. Try to get some daily aerobic exercise. A little power walking day time with a friend might be beneficial.....weather permitting. Don't walk in the evening and don't walk alone. Be safe. And walking with a friend should help lift your spirits. With PCOS you need to keep an eye on your blood sugar levels moreover because insulin resistance can be a feature of PCOS. It would be advisable to get a full medical check up if you haven't already done so.....particularly focusing on blood sugar, blood pressure, thyroid function and sex hormone levels (including free testosterone).

      There is no such thing as a miracle pill to melt fat.
      Regular aerobic exercise should help speed your metabolism a little.
      Avoid cakes, pastries biscuits and chocolate and instead try to get your carbohydrates from such as rice, wholemeal bread and pasta, and potatoes. This should help with blood sugar control. Try chewing fennel seeds before a meal if you want to try and reduce your appetite......it is an old-fashioned Mediterranean remedy for that....it might work for some so worth trying. And assuming you are not on any thyroid medication, you could take sea kelp after meals. Take as directed on the label. But don't take this if you are on any kind of medication for your thyroid. Also, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first before taking any supplements if you are on any prescribed medications or have any other medical conditions to be safe.

      Try to find a forum or support group online for women with PCOS.

      L-cartinine is an amino acid, toted as a weight loss supplement, it is totally safe for women. You consume L-cartinine every time you eat protein. Most supplement's made for men are totally safe for women. I would not take a libido booster made for men though.

      Supplements won't actually make any difference. Unfortunately so many others on this site *are* looking for the simple answer which is why you got the answers you did - like you already know there's no easy way out of this, but there is actually no evidence that any of these supplements actually would even help you out when you're following a healthy diet and getting more exercise. I have a friend who's tried most of them already and has yet to see any results. (Too bad she still hasn't caught on and decided to stop wasting her money)

      Use the money that you were planning on spending on supplements and spend them on the best quality foods (especially fruits and vegetables) that you can afford. Nothing's worse than trying to eat enough fruits and vegetables when you're stuck eating the same boring (and cheap) fruits and veggies every day. Berries are good, I love fresh pineapple, but you can also use that money for fresh herbs (calorie-free) or to try new and healthy foods which will add enough excitement to your new healthy eating plan that you'll be able to stick to it for the long term.

    Can you use meal supplements on a LOW-CARB diet?
    At the moment i am using 'body: shaping protein for women,' a meal supplement IN-BETWEEN 1 or 2 of my meals each day. I never consume over 30g carbohydrates as I am trying to lose weight. The supplement is supposed to aid in weight loss. I exercise 20-30 mins each day.

    Do you think i should just stay on my low-carb diet (as it has been working!!) or use the supplement as well?

      I have heard from hundreds of people that can't lose while including the Atkins bars & shakes to their way of eating. They claim that "sugar alcohols don't count" but I don't think they allow for weight loss. They may be fine for maintenance though.

      If you find the supplement helps, then it shouldn't be a problem but I'm betting if it contains sugar alcohols as most do, it may slow or stall weight loss.

      There is no reason to ever go off a low carb way of eating, you slowly re introduce carbs to your way of eating & as long as you don't exceed 9grams of carbs an hour (144 carbs a day) you won't trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone) no matter the calories. Most of us do low carb most of the time & if we cheat & slip back into low carb the next day. I still cheat with sugar occasionally. It's just not a regular part of my life (as it was preAtkins, 6 years ago, when I felt it controlled me & I had no control)

      The rungs to reintroduction of carbs in 5 gram units - all available to very active people in as little as 11 weeks. Make sure you do them in order & you can skip a rung if you do not intend to include it in your permanent way of eating, such as the alcohol rung.:
      * (minimum week 3 - maximum 25grams day) Acceptable vegetables, larger quantities
      * (minimum week 4 - maximum 30grams day) Add 5grams Fresh cheese
      * (minimum week 5 - maximum 35grams day) Add 5grams Nuts and seeds
      * (minimum week 6 - maximum 40grams day) Add 5grams Berries
      * (minimum week 7 - maximum 45grams day) Alcohol can be added if desired
      * (minimum week 8 - maximum 50grams day) Add 5grams Legumes
      * (minimum week 9 - maximum 55grams day) Add 5grams Other fruits
      * (minimum week10 - maximum 60grams day) Add 5grams Starchy vegetables
      * (minimum week11 - maximum 65grams day) Add 5grams Whole grains
      If you are continuing to lose or maintain (whichever is goal) in week 12 & beyond, you continue to add 5grams a day per week til you reach your personal carb level.

      Every day you should be eating these 2 items. If you need additional fat or calories, you can add a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil to the ground flax seed cereal. I highly recommend virgin coconut oil for people needing quick energy - coconut oil is the only fat that is converted to quick energy like a carb.

      Half an avocado mashed with 2 ounces of mayo seasoned with cayenne & eaten with pork rinds or celery.

      Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min for daily fiber needs.

      You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

      The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.

      Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

      The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

      Carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice, beans) trigger insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.

      High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.

      As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Many people gain weight on high carb, do low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb & gain weight. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar & maintain weight or health.

      I am adamantly opposed to low calorie dieting because most people lose a good portion of lean tissue (including vital organs like the heart) along with fat stores. There is no nutrition in fat stores, only energy.
