I do martial arts.The key is to keep your heartrate elevated continuously for at least 30 minutes. My normal workout takes about 50 minutes. I've lost 40lbs over the last year or so.

It's very hard to lose weight in a specific area because like gaining weight, the body just does it wherever it wants to. Diet and exercise are great, but in your case, you want to build muscle which will burn even more fat. I would suggest buying a couple sets of free weights (such as two five pounds and two ten pound weights) and then trying some of these exercises:http://www.strength-training-woman.com/strength-training-exercises.html
There are sections that tell you what muscle group the exercises target, but I would try to work out every muscle group possible. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to alternate muscle groups on Monday and Wednesday, then Tuesday and Thursday. For example, focus on upper body/arms on MW and on TR focus on lower body/legs. Just pick a few exercises and do those for a couple of weeks and then pick new exercises that work the same muscle groups for the next couple of weeks. That way the body doesn't get used to a certain motion and it will continue to build muscle.

I am currently about 100 lbs overweight and constantly obsess about my body. I hate for my husband to see other women on tv, magazienes, etc...that are sexy. I think "how can I be sexy to him after him looking at those truly sexy women"? I have tried all different types of weight loss programs but can't seem to stick to any of them! Help please!-

It is a vicious circle. You feel bad about yourself, inadequate about your appeal with regards to your husband, so you eat to feel better. You feel bad about eating, look at the women on tv, wonder why you don't look like that, and eat some more. You then gain more weight, and it all begins again.
Just for your information, the women on tv that you say are so sexy, they represent a very small portion of society as a whole. The average woman wears a size 14. These women on tv also deal with anorexia, bulimia, and drug abuse in some cases. I don't think you should worry too much about how you look, you are obviously the one he loves, or he wouldn't have married you in the first place. Just try and relax about it, don't obsess about it and try and eat a little more healthily. Do not diet, it will set you up for failure and make you feel worse about yourself.

I did Jenny Craig (and am back on it again after letting myself slip over the last 5 years). It's great. The food tastes really well and was easy to follow. The only thing that sucked was the prices. They say it's only -10 a day but it adds up QUICK and that doesn't include the stuff you have to buy yourself like milk and salad and fruit.I've heard weight watchers is good and cheap but that you have to be really motivated and really good and keeping on track in order for it to work. With Jenny, everything is planned out for you so you don't really have opportunity to screw up.

My main goals are to lose my broad shoulders and chest. I know that some guys with they were bigger, but that means nothing to me. I really don't care what other people find attractive, and I'm not interested in any of the women who want some big strong man to protect them.As my pic will demonstrate, I have a very long way to go. As far as diet is concerned, my plan is to stick to low-carb, low-fat, and not to eat until one hour after my stomach starts to rumble. I find a lot of times I eat just as an excuse - because I'm bored or because it's a certain time of day or because I feel like it - and I'm interested to see how much I would eat per day if I only ate when I was really, truly hungry.
I don't have some strict timeline to lose this much weight...I'm presuming it will take me till summer to lose it all. As for exercise, I'm going to stick to only cardio. I'm asking for new running shoes for Christmas since the cheap ones I bought give me blisters if I run too much, so until then, it will be 20 min on the treadmill, 20 on the Stairmaster, and 20 on the elliptical, seven days a week.

may - Maybe I shouldn't be giving advice since I'm overweight, but I really think the #1 thing people can do to both reduce their monthly food bill AND get healthier is to learn to cook. People always whine about how they don't have time, but I don't buy it. Yeah, it's easier to hit the drive-in instead of preparing a meal, but what you make at home will almost certainly be both healthier and cheaper than you get in restaurants.As far as disliking veggies...I don't love raw veggies (except carrots and celery), but try making stir fry with beef or chicken. Stir fry is full of veggies but they will be cooked and seasoned.

You need some help. Low fat is NOT the way to go to lose weight. That is a starvation diet and you will get very frustrated and have many plateaus on your way to becoming anemic. The typical diets being followed by Americans today are "diet dream team" inventions designed to keep you on that diet. It's quite amazing how endoctrination is the standard in America today and NOT education.Our understanding of marketing far exceeds any other disciplined study and especially the misinformation that is being spread by these marketing geniuses that are driving these so called "food experts" that are nothing more than "hired guns" of the food and agricultural industries that have successfully been able to make America one of the sickest nations on earth while convincing everyone they are wonderful.
I strongly suggest before you start ANY diet, you read the book called, "Life Without Bread" by Christian Allan, Ph.d. This book will give you some actual educated look at how your body works and what you need to manage your weight very successfully and still remain healthy and not require some lunatic diet being promoted by a profit driven "food expert."

Just in case anyone says this....I tried personal trainers. i'm in no position to hire one anyway (and I don't need one), but they just told me I was crazy to want to lose so much weight and to "take advantage" of my size....in other words, they misunderstood me. I know I'm not obese (moderately overweight at best), but I want to appear smaller. My problem is not my stomach, but my upper body...broad shoulders and chest.

If you joing a gym, you usually get a trainer to set up a program for you included in the membership. Most HMO these days in the US offer money towards gym memberships and weight loss programs.Your bmi is 29.4. this is considered overweight. 30 is considered obese.
Avoid fad diets, diet pills. It is a long hard battle. On average you want to lose 1 pound a week. It is a lifestyle change if you want to keep the weight off. You need to combine cardio, weights, stretching and healthy eating.There is no quick fix. You did not gain the weight overnight and you will not loose it overnight.
Take it from someone who has been there.

Women - Would you pay money for weight loss?
I have battled with weight for about 6 years since I hit my early twenties. Due stress, comfort eating and pure lack of exercise. However in the last couple of years I tried all sorts, gym every day, atkins, reducing calories etc - and in general I don't eat junk because we never buy any.I lost half of what I wanted to lose to start with and another half this year. I did it by quitting the conventional diets and following a plan I made for myself after understanding my body, metabolism etc.
I really think that a lot of people would benefit from and and see results, however in order for me to share my experience it would take me a long time to write everything for others to follow, that's why I was thinking of starting a diet / weight loss book or programme of some sort? I would have to write this book / programme and it would take long and don't want to be disappointed with no sales.
I know it works - but how many of you would pay for a diet / weigth loss programme. [Not a get skinny quick thing - but you see results in week one or even a few days] - there are no side effects and I would want my customers to verify with their physician before they decide to follow through.
If you have had weight issues and struggled or are still struggling would you pay? My idea is to split it into 3 phases, so that after pase one clients who see change will come back for phase 2 ( / £10 per phase) etc.

I'm sure to draw some ire for this one, but is anyone inspired to call Jenny Craig by watching two woman who look like cows try to sell their weight loss program?The commercials featuring Valerie Bertonelli and the gal from Cheers are RIDICULOUS. I'd rather call Nutri-systems. They feature a 70-plus year old man in their ads, and while that isn't usually the norm for selling a product, at least he really does look thin.

I see what you mean. What bugs me about those ads are that Valerie Bertonelli and Kirstie Allie both look as though they are having a hard time losing the weight. I remember a few ads where they hid Kirstie behind all of these props. I never understood showing overweight people in weight loss commercials. It certainly would not motivate me to lose weight but I guess that might be because I am thin already. I guess they do it because it helps to see someone going through a similar struggle as yourself. It provides a sense of community and it doesn't foster any unhealthy thoughts about weight loss since they don't use thin models.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to slow down weight gain in pregnancy?
I have gained about 10 pounds since finding out about my first pregnancy a month ago, and it didn't help that at the time I had just started a new weight loss program that I had to give up. I am so frustrated with this because I am trying to eat as well as I can but it seems like now more than ever food is always on my mind. I try to remind myself that I need to eat healthy for the baby, but everyone I know didn't start out their pregnancy overweight, so they don't have the same body image problem I do. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to manage the weight gain better during the pregnancy or to slow it down so I'm not gaining 8 pounds a month during my pregnancy? I worked really hard to get down to the weight I was at and I am already dreading being back at what I was three years ago when my weight loss odyssey began. I think that maybe if other women give me suggestions I can handle it better and maintain my weight gain better during this time.-

I think that focusing on your weight is going to be the problem. Instead, focus on the exercise. Swimming is wonderful for example. Get in to swimming, clocking yourself, seeing how many laps, etc..
Get involved in a program that lets you weigh yourself every week, and has supportive staff.

Calorie intake problems with weight loss?! (I am a male too NOT A female!)?
Hello guys! I am running into a little bit of trouble with my weight loss program. I know this is a question that mostly only females asks, and I feel kind of awkward asking this, but I am going to ask anyways, so I please ask for the best of your help. I have been making a major lifestyle change over the past 9 months and I have went from being ~185 pounds and have know become around ~138 pounds. I am striving very hard for the last of my efforts to get rid of the last of my stomach fat but have been having a very hard time achieving that lately. A little background about myself is that I am currently 15, and have been moderately active during the school year, but it has slowed down a little because of summer break and sports at school stopping. I usually worked out once a week during the school year, and now that summer is starting, I plan on working out about 3 times a week at the gym. I also use the dietary supplement CLA to aid in my weight loss along with all my hard efforts. Back to the main problem though, I believe that I may be eating way to little calories and causing to 1) do harm to my body and 2) slow down my weight loss. I on average consume around 1,000 to 1,500 calories and 1,500 being my highest. However throughout the week, I will sometimes have 1 or 2 days where I eat around 1,800-2,000 calories, and I feel terrible after that and feel like I have caused weight gain on myself. Know, after doing numerous research, I have convinced myself, but I am not sure if it is true or not, but have put myself in starvation mode and have stopped myself from losing weight. Also, I do not know if I am taking in way to little calories or if I am about right to lose weight. I think that at 1,500 I am eating my tops for the day to lose weight. Thank YOU SO MUCH for helping me out especially for a guy who doesnt really feel comfortable talking about something that usually only women do! For dinner, I usually have the fairly healthy cooking that I have my parents make, and lastly for my snacks throughout the day, I may sometimes have a bag of baked lays chips and the later on a few cookies or a little sweet cereal. first of all congratulations on getting this far! as your body loses weight, it gets harder and harder to come off. you are going to have to work harder. i think its a great idea to start working out 3 times a week, it will kick your metabolism into gear and help the weight come off. when you hit another wall, try doing cardio twice a week, and weight lifting 3 times a week, or something like that to switch it up and keep your body guessing.but onto the calories! you are definitely not eating enough. males need AT LEAST 1500 calories a day just for a normal day. thats without working out or anything. my advice to you is to go online and look up a daily calorie intake calculator, take time to find a good one where you enter your age, height, weight, etc etc. it will tell you how many calories you need to sustain the weight you are at right now. to lose weight, cut 500 calories off that number, and that is what you should be eating. 500 calories times 7 days a week is 3500 calories, which is equal to losing 1 pound. if you want to lose more, cut more, but there is a certain point where you cant take off too many calories or you will go into starvation mode. another thing you can do is look up the calorie intake for your goal weight, and eat that many calories.

I am interested in joining Curves for Women Gym. I have heard and read a few good things about their 6 week Weight Loss program or it may be called the 6 week Challenge Program. Anyone a member there or was a member have any incite on this gym? Prices-contract length's-can you go to all or just 1 of the locations? Details good and bad please. =)-

Its really hard. I tried it once and nearly passed out, and I was in pretty good shape at the time. You do a minute of exercise, at a very fast pace, and then switch machines for 30 minutes. I think I finished 5 minutes! You can get a visitors pass and they will tell you all about the rules and fees. The people in the one I visited were very nice, but I am just not cut out for the pace.
No matter where you go, GOOD LUCK! Its hard to get started, but once you do you will feel great!

I've always been known as "The Bigger Girl" and I'm ready for a change in my life. I've tried diets, running on an elliptical until I couldn't see straight and lifting weights until I couldn't move (I'm sure I was doing it wrong). Nothing works.What the scale says really does not matter to me but what I see in the mirror does.
I realize I've got a very long way to go until I'll be at my goal and I've decided to give myself 1 year to start seeing a change. If not, I've made an appointment for a consultation with a plastic surgeon for Summer 2010.
