Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Help in finding a WEIGHT LOSS calculator?
I'm looking for a site where you can input your daily calorie intake and your exercise level and find out (let's say) how much weight you could lose in a week.

I DON'T want a site which asks for your current weight and goal weight only to tell you how many calories you should eat to reach your goal weight.

Even when I search 'calculating weight loss' I only get sites for calorie calculators. I don't want a calorie calculator.

    • ANSWER:
      Try this,

      myfitnesspal.com

It has all that, you create an account and put in what you've eaten and what exercises you have done and it will tell you how much weight you will possibly loose if you stick to that diet & exercises.

I use it and its helped me a lot!

  2. QUESTION:
How reliable is this weight loss calculator?
Obviously there are a lot of factors involved in effective weight loss but as a rough guide does this seem ok?

    http://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php

Do you know a more reliable calculator?

    -x-

    • ANSWER:
Rather acurate unless you have some disease like diabetes. Here's the basic formula (calories consumed - calories burned)divided by 3500 = lbs of fat lost or gained. There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. The calculator takes it a step further and roughly estimates how many calories you'll burn factoring in you height, weight and age.

The calculator doesn't account for the weight gained from muscle as you increase activity level. Muscle weighs more than fat. However it appears to be a very good estimator.

  3. QUESTION:
Is there such a thing as a weight loss calculator?

  4. QUESTION:
Im doing an online weight loss calculator, and they asked me to write in my Daily calorie differential?
I plan on eating only 500 cals a day, so what would make my daily calorie differential be?

    • ANSWER:
To calculate your daily calorie differential you first need your BMR ( a calculator has been provided below in sources.) The BMR is about how many calories you would burn doing nothing all day.

Next you need how many calories you burn through exercise, (second link under sources, used to calculate how many calories burned through various exercises, based off weight and minutes done exercising).

And you wanted to cut down to 500 calories, (Eating this few calories a day could be very unhealthy and you will see limited gains because you need to lose weight slowly if you really want to keep it off!) I have included a third calculator that tells you how many calories you should eat if you want to lose x number of pounds per week.

Finally to figure out your daily calorie differential you would plug your numbers into the following equation:

Calories Consumed - (BMR + exercise) = Differential.

If your BMR and exercise combined is larger than your calories consumed the differential should be a negative value, thus you will need to draw energy from fat reserves and some muscle, and lose weight.

This should be done in the conjunction of eating smaller healthier meals 5-6 per day, (if you eat all your calories from fat or high carbohydrates results will be limited.) Eating more meals will keep your metabolism constantly going!

Good luck at meeting your goals.

  5. QUESTION:

Dont believe in those stuff. The best ways to see your improvement are:
      1. see yourself in a mirror if things have improved.
      2. compare your pictures before and after
      3. feel if your pants, blouses, undies, and bra make a difference.
      4. use tape measure on your waisteline
      5. use weighing scale (not at all times because muscles are more densed than fat)

Are calorie calculators accurate for weight loss? Has anyone tried them and found them to be dead-on?
For instance the ones that tell you:
If you weigh "a" and you want to weigh "b" and your bmi is "c", then you need to take in "x" calories per day in order to achieve your goal.

Also, if so, Is there a particular website's calculator you trust?

    • ANSWER:
There is way too much individual variation in metabolism and digestive efficiency for any of them to be all that accurate. On top of that, you have the error in measuring your caloric intake.

  22. QUESTION:
Can I really lose weight by just cutting calories?
I used a weight loss calculator that said if I consumed 1200 - 1300 cal per day I would lose 2 pds a week. So I can eat whatever I want, as long as it doesn't go over those calories? Like today I only have on meal, but it consists of a stromboli and a Mountain Dew.

    • ANSWER:
Yes however it is really hard to stay within those caloric amounts. But it can be done.

  23. QUESTION:
Why am I losing more weight than the weight loss calculators predicted?
Before I came up with my weight loss plan, I utilized about 5-6 different weight loss calculators online, all of which asked me for my sex, age, height, weight, activity level, and the amount of calories per day that I planned to consume. I put everything in, and said that I would be eating about 1000 calories per day. All of the calculators told me that I would lose about a pound a week. Even the other types of calculators that asked for your weight goal and time told me that I would have to eat about 1000 calories per day to reach my weight loss goal.

So why am I losing 4 pounds a week on this diet plan? I'm not being more physically active.

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like you are basically starving yourself. A lot of your initial weight loss may be water. Also, those calculators may be telling you what is a healthy and sustainable weight loss rate. It's hard to say, really. If you continue to lose weight at this rate, I would talk with a Doctor.
Also, it really is in your best interest to start incorporating some low-impact activities, like walking for 30 minutes every day.

  24. QUESTION:

  27. QUESTION:
    Weight loss goal realistic?
So I'm trying to loose weight, without KILLING myself.
    Here are the specs:

    -18 years old, male.
    - 5ft 10.5in in height
    - roughly 195 lbs.
    - pant size: 36

so I am trying to drop to 165 lbs. Which is considered a "healthy" weight. I would like to have this nearing completion (at least the weight loss part, i hope to continue exercising) in 3 MONTHS. So from March 1st > June 1st. 10 lbs a month seems reasonable, it's less than 3 lbs a week.

So, a big problem for me is snacking. I eat moderately, but pig out on snacks. So I have devised a plan that includes a lot of popcorn and celery for snacks. For these 3 months, I thought I would drop my caloric intake to about 1500/day.

For exercise, 45 mins on a moderate speed stationary bike and 1 hour on a treadmill (moderate): 3 X a week. I also walk about 40-50 mins a day out of necessity.

How does this plans seem? Can I get this done, is it realistic, will i burn enough? Suggestions?

Any weight loss calculators you guys can suggest?

  29. QUESTION:
Why has my weight loss seemed to slow down?
I've lost about 25 Lbs since the first of the year (average about 2 Lbs a week) I'm still losing but now it seems that the losing has slowed down, I've only dropped about 3 or 4 pounds in the last few weeks. I eat about 1500 calories a day on average which is well below the point to lose weight according to the BMI and weight loss calculators I've used on MSN's site. I'm a 48 year old man and I have a job that includes some physical work, ie: climbing in and out of trucks, lots of stair climbing and moving heavy freight part of the day. I don't really want to cut my calorie intake to any less than 1500 a day. Any thoughts from anyone else in the same situation ? Am I on the right track and just getting impatient ? Thanks everyboby.

    • ANSWER:
You must be reaching what is called a "weight loss plateau".

The lower one weighs the less calories required. This is why you lost weight at first at a quicker pace. To counteract this, you should diet for shorter amounts. Aim to maintain your weight. And then restart your diet. It should counteract the plateau.

The weightloss will occur over a longer period of time and it will take a longer time to get to your goal but it saves you from having to cut out more and more calories in the long run.

      Good Luck.

  31. QUESTION:
Do you have an opinion on my weight loss plan?
Ok so I went to this site that calculates your daily calorie needs. It says that to MAINTAIN in my weight (250), given that I consider myself lightly active, I should eat 3575 calories a day. Also supposedly, if you want to lose 2 pounds a week, you need to take 1000 calories less than what you need to maintain your weight.

Sooo, if I eat 2000 calories a day, I should lose a little more than two pounds a week.

My plan is to eat 2000 calories until it takes less than 3000 calories to maintain my weight. According to this calculator, that will be around 210 pounds. It says at to hundred pounds, I can eat 2860 a day to maintain. So at that weight, I am going to eat about 1860 a day (1000 less than what I need to maintain). I will do this until I reach 160. Then I should be able to maintain around 2288 but before I go back to that, I'll be eating what I need to still lose until I reach the 160. Does this make sense?
I know that 3500 isn't going to help me lose. I'm just saying that eating that supposedly will maintain my weight which is way way way to high anyway.
And I do exercise. I go to curves 3-4 times a week(actually pushing myself on the equipment). Also I try to walk twice a week.
Here's the calculator I am using.

    http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_6_1x_Calorie_Calculator.asp

    • ANSWER:
      Honestly, no.
Forget the calculator stuff. Basic intake is around 2,000 cals.
Most people on a diet it around 1,600-1,800 calories. That's what you need to do.
Eating 3,575 calories a day? Not good. It's not going to help you "maintain" 250 lb, you're definetly going to GAIN weight. Unless you NORMALLY eat that much.
To cut a pound a week, it's true that you need to take 1,000 calories less. Less than what you NORMALLY eat. Track what you eat and calculate off that. I don't really trust this weight/calculator business, because in my opinion it doesn't take a lot of other major factors into account.

Want to lose weight? Simple plan. Hard work.:
      - - - - -
      - Load up on the veggies & fruits. Lowest calorie plan out there, totally natural. Find your favorites - I like mangoes & strawberries, I can a whole box in a sec!
      - Cut the junk food. No sodas, my dear. No candy. I guess it's ok to indulge, but not daily. Try to find substitutes, or balance it out [like chocolate-dipped strawberries].
      - Lots of water & sleep. Water flushes out toxins, keeps you healthy, and increases metabolic rate. Sleep - can we ever get enough? Like a cute saying I heard the other day, you can buy all the diet pills and organic food you want, but water is cheap and sleep is free.
      - Careful of what you snack on! A bite of your friend's cookie, a swig of Coke from your co-worker, a couple fries from your sister's McDonald's bag can all add up to 700 cals a day.
      - Exercise. Yes. You have to. Dieting is fun and all that [yeah right] but exercise helps you get there a lot faster and STAY there. You CAN indulge in that occasional Snickers if you exercise. Yoga, running up stairs, fitness tapes, jumping rope, gardening, kickboxing, swimming, lacrosse, basketball, tennis, cardio dance, millions of jumping jacks - whatever works for YOU.

You've heard this all before, right? Because it's what WORKS. It takes intense determination, and may need some restarting over and over. I know. I'm on day two of my millionth diet plan and just dug into some peanut butter. But hey! I did cardio dance today.

  32. QUESTION:
Eat nothing, how quickly will I loose weight?
My new medication is making it nearly impossible to eat. I used to drink about 48 oz. of water daily, but now I can hardly drink. I am able to stay hydrated, but it takes a lot of effort. I've been sipping broths and V8 when I can. Since the medication is not for weight loss, I wondered how much weight I might be loosing. I'm already thin, so I was wondering if anyone knew of a calorie/weight loss calculator, or could share personal experiences of loosing weight this way and possibly the pace at which it happened. Thanks.

How long does it take to notice weight loss after cutting calories?
I used a BMR calculator to figure about what calories I need to maintain on a daily basis. The number came to 2477. That would maintain my weight of 220 pounds. Just so you know I’m male, 6-1 in height, age of 44 and not that active. Everyday for the last 2 1/2 weeks I have cut my calorie intake to 1800 or lower. I’m starting to think my scale is broken. Maybe I am operating under some bad assumptions.

Heredity, gender, age, body size. diet and nutrition, activity level, and your overall health factor in on determining how high or low your metabolism is. It is normal for metabolism levels to lower as a person ages. Because of this it is important to begin stepping up your exercise routines in your thirties and forties.

      Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Eat Regularly - Eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day will give you energy throughout the day--helping you to burn calories. Whereas, calories eaten during larger meals tend to get stored as fat.
Maintain a Balanced Diet - Not only how often you eat is important, but your food choices are equally as important. Nurture you body with the appropriate balance of protein and carbs.

Eating whole foods rather than processed food gives your digestive system a workout that burns calories. For example: choose an apple over apple juice.
Workout with Weights - Building muscle mass will replace stored fat. As you build muscle tissue your metabolism increases.
Don't Forget Cardio - You need to get that heart rate up and breathe a little heavier. Twenty to thirty minutes of cardiovascular activity 5 days a week is recommended. Brisk walking or swimming are good. Or utilize exercise equipment (exercise bike, treadmill, or elliptical trainer)
Fruits and vegetables are clearly an important part of a good diet. Almost everyone can benefit from eating more of them, but variety is as important as quantity. No single fruit or vegetable provides all of the nutrients you need to be healthy. The key lies in the variety of different fruits and vegetables that you eat.
Some basic fruit and vegetable tips:
•Try to eat more fruits and vegetables. If you need 2,000 calories a day to maintain your weight and health, aim for at least nine servings (4½ cups) a day.
•Choose a variety of different fruits and vegetables. It's easy to get into a rut when it comes to the food you eat. Break out and try a wider variety - include dark-green, leafy vegetables; yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables; cooked tomatoes; and citrus fruits.

  35. QUESTION:
Best weight loss plan for a 15 year old girl?
I am a 15 year old, height is 5 feet 1 inch, and weight is around 135 pounds. Using a calorie calculator I found out how many calories I would eat everyday to maintain my weight, and it said about 1869 calories. I am aiming to lose 20 pounds, and the calorie calculator suggested decreasing my calorie intake by about 500 calories, but I still need some tips. Could anyone suggest a healthy calorie intake, and along with that, a plan for the day specifying how many calories to take when?

    • ANSWER:
I think 20 lbs is too much and at your age, you are still growing, so that's not a good idea. However, there is NOTHING wrong with getting in shape and being fit and healthy! But muscle weighs more than fat so you could be 135 lbs and chubby and you could be 140 lbs and a tiny, lean, figure skater. Muscle weighs more. So rather than focusing on your weight, get out measuring tape and measure your waist! A realistic goal is 24 inches, which is basically a size 8 in England, and size 4 in the U.S, and is such a size that looks really fit and means you have a slim waist without being like, emaciated.

Don't use a calorie calculator, they won't tell you anything. First off you burn like 1400 calories a day just by living, and that's even if you didn't get out of bed all day. So an average day you burn like 1800 and then thirty mins exercise and it is reaching 2000 calories. So just eat healthily and in good proportions (you should eat the same about of veggies as you do carbohydrates, and then a little bit of protein), when you are full, STOP EATING. Drink water, and NOTHING ELSE. No fizzy drinks, they are terrible, and water flushes out your toxins! Apart from that, eat in moderation, so Macdonalds no more than once a month, and only a little bit of chocolate a few times a week.

all of them are amazing. especially the first one. phew, you will feel the burn!
Last tip: go on runs. Grab a friend, throw on your sneakers and some terry cloth shorts and hit the road. Its amazing.

  36. QUESTION:
i need good weight loss tips?
    please help me!
I used a BMI calculator and it said i am over weight.
i need good weight loss tips!

    • ANSWER:
First of all, try not to do anything drastic. The worst thing you can possibly do is lose too much weight too fast. This will make it come back worse the second time around!

If you're looking to do this on your own, try taking it slowly at first. Big changes can really affect your health. If you have some extra time, try taking a walk around the block. Even a little exercise helps to get your blood pumping and your muscles moving in a healthy way. Also, try to take a little more vegetables at dinner, or drink one less soda a day.

Little changes can go a long way, and even if it seems it's taking too long you're on the right path!

When will I notice the weight loss?
I am a female and I weight 151 lbs and I am 5'6" tall. I used to weigh 161. I haven't noticed a change in my body, though. I was only a tiny bit overweight at 161 lbs and now, according to the BMI calculator, I'm not overweight (though I will still be losing more weight) but this makes no sense to me because I feel no different and my clothing fits the same. How many more lbs do I need to lose until I see or feel a difference?

    • ANSWER:
You need to lose a minimum of about ten percent of your body weight before you begin to notice a difference. In your case, that means sixteen pounds.

Stick with your program, and you'll soon notice results.

P.S. I'm six feet, 160 pounds now, and I'm right in the middle of the desirable weight range, with a BMI of 21.7. I feel very energetic at this weight.

  42. QUESTION:
How do I define light, moderate and heavy exercise via the stationary bicycle?
I am trying to compute weight loss via the online weight loss calculator, I am 174cm or 5 feet 7 and 156 pounds and I plan to reach about 134 pounds.

    • ANSWER:
we just talked about this in my exercise sport science class. moderate activity would be you working out with a friend and being able to carry on a conversation without being out of breath. the heart rate is increased and you should break a light sweat. therefore, light exercise is very little change in the heart rate and no sweat, and heavey exercise would be to the point of exhaustion, sweat, and working toward the max heartrate.

  43. QUESTION:
Are these online calculators for weight loss accurate?
It seems like they are allowing me too many calories...either that or im starving myself.

Ive been trying to stay under 1500 a day but all of these calculators tell me i can have 2200 calories or more a day and still maintain my weight. Is this right?

    Im a male, 27 years old, 5'9" and i weigh 203.

I also do jogging and weight training.
im calculating for maintenence because its common knowledge that 500 calories below that is my weight loss goal...or 250 with my exercise...

    • ANSWER:
It is not possible to answer your question about calculators because some are accurate and some are not and you didn't tell us which you used.

It is not possible to say anything meaningful about your caloric intake because you did not say anything about your activity level. All we can determine from what you said is your BMI (30) and RMR (1886). Jogging iand weight training mean nothing because we don't know how much time and effort you spend on each.

What you should do is go here http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php and calculate your RMR and then click on the "activity level" link and begin adding up your daily activity to get and best possible daily burn rate for a given day.

Be sure to read http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_BMR.php and http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_need.php to help you understand what you're attempting to do.

Even the best calculator will not give you good answers if you provide it with insufficient or inaccurate information.

      Good luck and good health!!

  44. QUESTION:
Do I have an unhealthy obsession with weight loss?
have recently lost a lot of weight (55 lbs) and I am in the dead center for my healthy weight range (5'2, 122..checked it on a BMI calculator). I STILL want to lose 20 more pounds, which would put me at 102. According to the BMI calculator, this would put me below my healthy weight range for my height. I now only eat once or twice a day and when I do, I feel sick to my stomach. I do not throw up or not eat. Even though I do not do that, could I have a body issue problem or even an eating disorder? I am just really lost and worried.

    • ANSWER:
Its very likely that you're starting a bit of an unhealthy obsession, especially since you're at a perfect weight for your age/height.

For starters, congratulations on losing 55lbs, that's quite an achievement! Try to focus on how far you've already come :)

I don't know why you would feel sick after eating, other than just the stress and worry about gaining the weight back. That combined with not eating enough - or often enough - could make your stomach upset.

You might want to talk to your doctor, or consider seeing a nutritionist to help you work through some of this. Good luck, and congratulations again!

  45. QUESTION:
Is there any scientific proof that eating 5 times a day increases weight loss?
I have been eating 5-6 times a day for 1.5 months now. I have lost quite a bit of weight (from 215 lbs to 193), but i cut down to 2000 calories a day, so i was bound to drop some.
Eating many times a day does help with the hunger aspect of things, but none of the calorie calculators i have found add it to the equation, which leads me to believe it really doesn't matter, it's all about the calories. Is there any actual studies on it? Thanks for your responses.

    • ANSWER:
      congratulations on ur weightloss!
if you eat 5 times a day, try to eat small portions. dont eat big portions.
actually, if you eat small portions 5times a day, then you would be less hungry and less likely to reach out for more food.
also, eating 5 times a day keep you satisfied. if you are hungry, you would be more likely to reach for more higher calories food. therefore, eating 5 times a day help increase weight loss.

    • ANSWER:
Okay friend, here's the situation. You are over training your body as well as not getting enough nutrients into your system.

You do not need to do so much cardio, in fact a balanced weight loss program must consist or aerobic as well as anaerobic exercises. You need to also remember that your caloric intake is EVERYTHING. You need to have your doctor check your LEAN BODY MASS and help you create a caloric intake plan to go along with it.

Multiply your lean body mass by 1700 to get the amount of calories you would need to maintain your lean mass without gaining too much more muscle.

THIS MEANS YOU MUST TRAIN EFFICIENTLY. You will absolutely never reach the goal you desire optimally without proper cardiovascular/weight training. Losing weight by only focusing on diet is a naive and very inefficient way to get fit. If you are not willing to work hard, you will never reach your real potential.

You must remember that your diet is half the battle, and if you are not getting enough complex carbohydrates to maintain the proper caloric intake you are going to put your body in such a deficit that it will never lose weight. The primary reason you have lost so little despite working so hard is because you are not fueling your metabolism enough to burn fat... you're doing the opposite.. you are FORCING your body to store more fat because it's doing so much more work and burning calories it thinks it needs to survive. This is why you have lost so little.. you are naturally going to lose fat.. however, with your training as it is now you are fighting your own body... and losing.

You must understand that eating healthy is a very difficult thing if you are not educated in the proper nutrients you need. Furthermore, you would benefit from doing more research on the proper amounts of nutrients you need in order to lose weight healthily. NEVER RESTRICT FOOD INTAKE.... merely OPTIMIZE it. YOU NEED MORE FOOD TO LOSE WEIGHT NOT LESS. I can not stress this enough. In order to lose weight you must fuel your metabolic rate and the only way to increase the thermogenic effect is to consume quality calories.

remember: 50% calories from complex carbohydrates, 30% calories from protein, and 20% calories from fat.

You want to conquer this? Know your opponent. In this case, you are your own opponent. All of my trainees have lost over TWENTY POUNDS following these principles and they can work for you too.

  50. QUESTION:
Is it true that not eating enough calories hinders weight loss?
I used one of those calorie calculators, and I should be eating roughly 1900 calories a day. I eat around 1300.

    Is this bad for me?
I'm losing about 1.5 pounds a week, which is good, but some weeks I gain weight. I don't understand it. I also work out for an hour each day.

    Any advice?
(I am 5'7", 15 years old, and weigh 180 pounds)

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it is true. 1,300 calories isn't TERRIBLE, but really you should get 1,500 or more. Also, be aware that weight goes up and down naturally. If you weigh 180 one day, and 182 the next day, it isn't in fat and it will go away. Stuff like that is supposed to happen.
