      BURN MORE CALORIES THAN YOU CONSUME

      Your body needs energy to do everything. Eat, sleep, breathe, move, grow. It all takes energy. It gets that energy from the food you eat. But it only needs a certain amount per day (2000 calories for women, 2500 calories for men). If you don't take in that much, your body gets the rest of it from burning fat stores.

      So if you exercise, your calorific need is even greater, which means if you stick to a lower calorie diet, your body needs to burn MORE fat to kep you alive.

      You could eat anything you wanted, in any quantity, as long as you exercised enough to burn off the excess calories taken in. So, no need to diet. Reduce your calorie intake, increase youractivity, and watch the weight disappear.

      If I knew your weight it would be easy for me to know if you were overweight or not.

      eat healthy. it's important to eat a little bit from the four food groups (breads, meats, grains, fruit & vegetables). eat 4-5 small meals a day to keep yourself full. drink plenty of water. i usually keep a water bottle with me and drink after every meal and during exercise.
      walk 1 hr at least 2-3 days a week.

      Before you rush into crazy exercise regimes and lower your self esteem more than is necessary, please stop and think. Go to your doctor and ask him/her to weigh you and find out what weight you should be to be healthy, not what gossip magazines tell you you should weigh. You may find out that you are actually an okay weight for who you are, if not then talk to your doctor about how to healthily lose weight. In either case, you should still keep working out to stay healthy.
      As for the exercise, you want to be doing a full body workout to get rid of excess weight in all areas of your body. But first, I want to say well done for turning to exercise rather than dieting (because those diets only temporarily help you anyway, and make you gain twice the weight back as soon as you finish.) I recommend that you swim lengths at your local pool (or if you are lucky use your own.) Did you know that swimming 1km is about equal to running 4km? So I advise that you try and go to the pool for a few hours 3 or 4 times a week (if you can fit that into your schedule) and do an hour on the treadmill every day. Remember, it's not about how skinny you are, it's how healthy you are.

      here's my top six:

      1) UNDERSTAD WEIGHT LOSS - the basic premise of weight loss is rediculously simple. its the first law of thermodynamics and states that in order to loss weight you must be expending more calories than you are taking in. so, while eating healthy is very good for your overall health, what you really need to concentrate on is your caloric intake per day. a number in btwn 1400-1800calories a is what it takes for women to lose weight. as long as you accomodate that peice of chocolate or soda within your daily caloric range its ok to have it. switching to diet soda is a great way to save your calories for a more nutritious food though!

      2) MEAL TIMING AND FREQUENCY - this includes snack at night. as long as everything fits in your caloric budget you can eat it whenever in the day or night you want. the problem with eating food 1 hour or two before bed is that when you sleep your body doesn't need very many calories so if you've just eating a huge whatever before bedtime most of those calories will be stored as body fat rather than being used up from activity as they would be during the day time. its a good idea to eat every 2-3 hours rather than your 3 square meals a day. this provides your body with constant energy and reduces the likelihood of food being stored as excess body fat.

      3)DON'T GET ALL TIED UP WITH FAD DIETING!! - fad diets aren't designed for permanent life long weight loss and or maintainence. they are only designed for the short term and so that you see fast results. the problem is that most of them operate by cutting out entire food groups! this is not healthy! your body MUST have carbohydrates, your body MUST have healthy fats and you body MUST have lean protein sources. when you've struck a balance with these things, it is then that you will truly feel satiated.

      4) KNOW YOUR MACRONUTRIENT BALANCE - you should be getting 50% of your daily calories from whole grain carbs, fruits and veggies, 30% of your daily calories from lean proteins(chicken, fish, low fat dairy) and 20% from healthy fats (olive oil, raw nuts, organic nut butter, flaxseed, avacado).

      5) DO NOT LIVE YOUR LIFE AS A CARDIO QUEEN - i see so many people spend hours and hours at the gym on the cardio equipment but NEVER touch the weights. this is mostly women because they are afraid of "bulking up." this is a myth...women just don't get that big and when you look at the body builders that do its because they can lift 30 times more weight than the average person could. the truth of the matter is that weight training is very important especially for the woman/man over the age of 25. after this age we naturally lose lean muscle mass each year which is just replaced by ugly, lumpy FAT. this is also why our metabolism slows down. muscle tissue is very active tissue and is what keeps your metabolism burning hot not just when you are exercising but also when you are at rest! so it is important to regain this lost muscle mass and to maintain it as you get older.

      6) KEEP A FOOD/EXERCISE JOURNAL - here is where you'll be keeping track of what you eat, what your goals are, your weight/ measurements and what exercise you do so you can see what is working for you and what isn't. it will help hold you accountable for your actions and help to focus on your goal. its very important to be honest when making your recordings so that you have a reliable way of being able to look back at it and know what was working and what may have been the cause of your weight loss plateau.

      There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

      The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

      Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

      To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.

      For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

      Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

      There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you work them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

      If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

    TIMELINE: (25 years old) i started actively trying losing weight. 11 months later i am 50 lbs lighter (from 185 now at 135). about 3 - 4 months later i start noticeing this thinning on the top of my head (for the first time in my life). ive never had issues with hair thinning EVER before (im 26 now), and i dont know if it runs in my genetics because i was adopted.

    Im 26 yr old guy, beginning about 2 months ago for the first time in my life i noticed that i can start seeing my scalp through my hair in the light!!! prior to this i had lost 50 lbs within id say 10 - 11 months..(vigirous excercise, supplements, not eating as much junk, etc). wel i feel great because of that, but now my hair is thinning on the top and im really scared that it wont grow back!

    could this rapid weight loss have caused this hair thinning ?? or do u tink i was going to lose my hair anyways and coincidentally it just started showing a few months after all my weight loss??

    TIMELINE: (25 years old) i started actively trying losing weight. 11 months later i am 50 lbs lighter (from 185 now at 135). about 3 - 4 months later i start noticeing this thinning on the top of my head (for the first time in my life). ive never had issues with hair thinning EVER before (im 26 now), and i dont know if it runs in my genetics because i was adopted.

    So will i be lucky and it will start growing back to its original fullness? or am i SOL?/ im really scared ive always had a full head of hair but now its sort of noticable! it comes out when i am in the shower , shampooing it, running my hand through it..when i go to style it etc..
    i have dyed it before on a semi regular basis but now i dont. i also put a little gel in it. but again, ive never had this problem in all 26 years of my life up until 3 months ago when i began noticing this. if this is the sacrifice i have to make for the weight loss..then id rather be 180 lbs like i was b4 and get my hair back!! im 5' 9' and asian too. please tell me that this is only temporary and its going to grow back! oh and one more thing i was unders a lot of stress during that time period of weight loss to but i have been stress free for months now
    i did start eating A LOT less when i was actively losing the weight

      ok I didn't read all that you wrote but there is no direct link between hair loss and diet if you had a healthy diet ie exercising and eating well.
      If you been starving yourself and eating only poultry it's normal that your body lacking vitamins make you have hair loss. Go get some vitamins at pharmacy, there are special ones for hair nutriments and watch you are eating, don't cut on the red meat, fish, veggies, eggs.
      Oh and I frogot to add that at 26 it's normal to be losing hair already

      Well, I had a look through all of those - and of the ones posted I have experience with 5 of them. The only one really liked out of all of the was the fat burning furnace. It has great step by step information for exercising and nutrition. It also gives you access to a lot of great recipes.

      It has both an exercise regiment and a meal plan so you will gain muscle while losing fat!

    Best way to loose weight on my top section?
    Like most men I carry my weight on the upper body. I was thinking running might help slim me down quickly I have changed my diet but would like suggestions for more weight loss. Any special foods I should be eating?

    • ANSWER:
      I've been there. For the diet part of it, you need to eliminate or cut way down on processed flour and processed sugar. If you need to sweeten something, use honey. You'll find that you crave less sugar over time, actually--candy bars taste just awful to me now. The white flour is important too. Go for whole grains. Up the veggies and fruits in your diet. Importantly, don't try to eliminate all fat or protein. Just stick with mostly good fats. Also, having a "day off" when you can eat whatever you want kind of helps, I think. Also: NO POP/SODA, and MINIMAL ALCOHOL. The occasional beer or glass of wine is fine. Diet soda is bad for you too because it screws up how your body perceives hunger. On all that, don't go cold turkey right away--just try to limit it at first, and then keeping going. Avoid big meals, and instead eat lighter meals/snacks 5-6 times a day. Eat a big breakfast, smaller lunch, and smaller dinner. Don't eat within 4 hours of your bedtime

      For the exercise, running is great but you need to talk to someone who is a runner about who to get into it. You have to start slow and intersperse running/jogging/waking. And make sure you go to an athlete's shoe store to get properly fitted for running shoes. But for upper body specifically, try doing punching or martial arts. Abdominal work is fine, but won't show you results because the muscles you build there don't burn enough belly fat on their own. Do weight work on your chest, etc.

      And then there was my secret: latin dancing. Don't laugh, but find a place in your area where you can do this cheap or watch some demos on youtube. Latin motion, esp. the samba, works your belly area like crazy--you will feel a serious burn after even five minutes of doing it if you're doing it right. Plus, being good at dancing actually makes you better at sex (seriously!).

      I would get to a doctor, if I were you. Many of these symptoms could be related to hyperthyroidism or even just a virus, but the loss of balance and double vision is more concerning.
      This could be a symtom of some kind of problem with the inner ear (such as labrinthitis, which can actually be triggered by having the flu), or a more serious neural problem such as multiple sclerosis.

      Your problem is not necessarily something that serious, of course, but the best way to find out for sure is by talking to a doctor, especially if you are very worried.

      You'll probably see results ina month to two months . Remember you see your thighs everyday so it might not look like you see a difference . I would suggest taking pictures of your thighs ever 3 weeks or a month then comparing them

      When you do upper body muscle training you will burn more fat and calories in this area. Try lifting weights doing upper body exercises. Concentrate on using weights that are challenging, but not too heavy b/c you want to do higher number of quick reps to keep your heart rate up. Push ups and pull ups are great exercises, even if you must modify and do them on your knees and standing on a box/chair. Bottom line is the best way to decrease any area of fat is cardio with some weights specifically focused on those area. checkout the fitness magazine website they have specific things for specific body types.

    Any ideas roughly how many calories I should be consuming for weight loss?
    I'm 22, 5'2" and weigh 125lbs. I'd like to lose 10lbs.

    Currently I consume no more than 1350 calories per day, in healthy low-carb foods, and am fairly active. I do studio cycling twice a week, aerobics twice a week, swimming on Sundays and a 4 mile walk at least three times a week on top of my usual daily activity.

    Does anyone know roughly what my ideal calorie range would be for weight loss, without sending my body into starvation mode?

      Below 1500 is already pretty low, even though you're a petite woman and don't need to eat much, you are exercising so I wouldn't go below 1500.

      If you're not losing weight it may be because your body's metabolism is so healthy that it's resisting any weight fluctuations. Also, many people fail to measure out the correct proportions of food (they think a "serving" is how much they eat in a sitting, when really it's probably a lot smaller than that) so you may be miscounting your calories. Also, people don't count calories in their drinks. Milk, juice, soda, coffee with cream/sugar, etc. all have calories. Make sure you're counting your calories right.

      Also, drink LOTS of water for weight loss. Water flushes out the bad from your system, acts as a mild appetite supressent, and has no calories and helps your metabolism burn more calories!

      After you burn all of the calories you have eaten for that meal by exercizing, your body will start to 'eat' fat for the energy you need to keep exercizing. If you stay hydrated while doing this, you will loose weight in no time, and you can still eat a full meal!
