Supplements For Women

Menopause can go one of two ways. It can be a miserable experience characterized by aggravating menopause symptoms. Or, it can be a pain-free transition that's barely noticeable. In fact, choosing the right menopause supplement can make all the difference. nutraOrigin, makers of high quality vitamins for women, shares the secrets of natural treatment for menopause.

Menopause symptoms: Common but avoidable

Every woman experiences her own unique set of menopausal symptoms, which can include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, heart palpitations, vaginal and urinary changes, and decreased memory and concentration. Most experts agree these symptoms are caused by low or fluctuating estrogen levels, which throw everything off kilter. But that doesn't mean a difficult menopause is unavoidable.

Between 75-85% of American women going through "the change of life" report experiencing menopausal hot flashes. Yet only about 10% of Japanese women do. Why the discrepancy? It's all in the diet. Japanese women eat several servings of soy a day, which naturally contain anti-hot-flash substances called isoflavones. American women don't.

Natural Hot Flash Remedies and Menopause Treatments from nutraOrigin

MenoBalance Supplement
Isoflavones help you get control of hot flashes - but they also provide relief for a whole range of symptoms. How? These phyto-nutrients have the remarkable ability to imitate the biological activities of female hormones. That means that even if your own natural levels of estrogen are plummeting, isoflavones can trick your body into thinking it has enough.

Soy is well-known for its natural content of isoflavones, but most of the research studying isoflavones for menopause relief has been performed on red clover. nutraOrigin formulated MenoBalance with a high-potency blend of isoflavones from red clover and kudzu. The formula additionally protects cardiovascular health, with patented Actifolate folic acid and resveratrol; supports bone integrity, due to the synergistic activity of isoflavones and vitamin D; and provides protection to hormone-sensitive tissues, with rosemary and turmeric.

Black Cohosh Essentials Supplement
Scientists have conducted numerous studies demonstrating the efficacy of black cohosh for relieving the discomforts of menopause, with minimal or no side effects. In fact, one double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found the herb was 47% more effective than conjugated estrogen at beating menopause hot flashes! Cohosh has also been shown to help alleviate headaches, heart palpitations, and nervousness and irritability associated with menopause. The evidence is so strong that the German Commission E (similar to our FDA) has approved black cohosh as a treatment for menopause.

nutraOrigin's Black Cohosh Essentials features 80 mg of standardized black cohosh - four times the amount seen in weaker extracts - for maximum effect. It also includes lemon balm and motherwort, which help reduce stress and anxiety.

Nutra Multi Iron-Free Multivitamin
Studies show older women are more likely to be deficient in key vitamins like B1, B2, B5, folic acid and D than younger women. That's why a multivitamin like nutraOrigin's Nutra Multi Iron-Free is so important. It delivers all the necessary vitamins and minerals needed to create a foundation of health - including 500 mg of calcium - but leaves out the iron, since too much can be harmful to menopausal women.

The experts at nutraOrigin recommend taking all three formulas together for maximum synergistic effect.

What I found helpful was a cobination of black cohosh, dong quai, and soy. I've heard from other women that it did reduce the hot flashes. 6. QUESTION:
What are some good supplements for women?
I just started P90X and I want to know if there are any supplements I could purchase to go along with the workouts. I'm trying to lose weight (about 8lbs) and tone up. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi.

If you purchased P90X from the Beachbody website, you will notice that they also sell the P90X Recovery Formula. It is a 4:1 blend of carbs to protein that is also found in drinks such as Accelerade. On top of that they have an assortment of protein bars and multivitamins.

You can substitute their multivitamins with your own if you so choose. I would recommend that you definitely invest in a whey protein powder and drink a shake after your workout. It definitely helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

  7. QUESTION:
Vitamins and Supplements for women who are 60 and up?
I am sixty and I am taking the usana health pak 100. I am thinking of switching to bayer supplements after I've finished with usana. Is there someone out there who can give me an advice as to what to take or what is the best out there.

    • ANSWER:
      Hello Lillia,
In my opinion, the best vitamin for us in our 60's is the Centrum Silver or a generic equivilent......It is an excellent vitamin/mineral combination.....it is also imperitive that we take Calcium 500mg with Vitamin D for our bones so that we do not have an Osteoporosis problem.....have your doctor prescribe Fossamax for you too, that would be for your bones as well.
At our age it is so important to take very good care of ourselves at all times and really pay attention to what we are doing so that we don't become pre-occupied and accidentally fall down and break a bone. I want to wish you the very best of luck and commend you for wanting to do such a good job in taking care of yourself

  14. QUESTION:
What are the daily supplements women who exercise shoud take?
I need to know what supplements are best recommended for someone who works out. I work-out anywhere between 2 to 3 times a week. 30 minutes cardio, 30 min arms/ lower body, & 30 min abs. I also watch my calorie intake.

I am an anxious eater and I dont want to take RX Meds that have a TON of side effects just to loose weight, besides the fact that Dr's would not prescribe me any because they always comment on "how thin" I already am. I completely disagree. I am 5'4 and weigh 120 lbs & 16% body fat. My goal is to be @ 110 lbs & 13% body fat.

I know that most women who work out and have defined bodies take supplements, I just want to know which ones?

As of now Im just sort of guessing on it. By taking these supplements, I wish to loose weight, control my anxiety eating habits and feel full.

    My daily supplements:
    Hoodia 500 mg
    Carb Shredders
    Fish Oil Pills
    multi vitamins
Krio Oils pills (occasionally before going to bed)
Hot Rods (3 pills 30 min before working out)

....Like I said, Im just guessing and Im not even sure if Im doing this correctly. I asked my Physician to refer me to a nutritionist but apparently they are not covered by insurance any longer and my gym does not offer one.

Id like advice from a current female body builder, trainer or nutrionist. Just anyone that has expertise in this area.

Who can recommend some good nutrietion supplements for pregnant women?

Go to your local planned parent hood. I am currently 16 weeks, and I have prenatel vitamins. Everything I need for my pregnancy are in my vitamins, from iron, to calcium. You also need to watch what you eat...not too much chocolate, starch, sugars..I think you get the picture. Basically, you need to go to your docter and see what specific things you will need cause not every pregnant woman has the same exact needs.

  26. QUESTION:
What supplements will help with building muscle mass?
I am a powerlifter and have done pretty well building muscle on my own so far but was wondering if anyone knew of any supplements (for women or ok for both men and women) that would help me along in this.

    • ANSWER:
You have to eat more to build mass. It's that simple. Try complex carbs and protein. Whey protein is best taken right after or just before your workout. Also you can try creatine, which pushes more water into your muscles and allows you to work out longer.

You probably aren't building mass BECAUSE you are a powerlifter.

Powerlifters are generally relatively small given the amount of weight they lift. Powerlifters focus on getting the maximum out of a few reps and generally train with heavy weights for a few reps.

Endurance athletes do the opposite. They train with light weights and many reps to build endurance in the fast-twitch muscle fiber.

You need to work in the middle to actually build mass. Concentrate on 3 sets of weights that you can left 8-10 times with good form.

Also, genetics plays a role and some people with fast metabolism have a hard time gaining mass.

thanks! good answers all of them!

    • ANSWER:
Supplements should be taken to ASSIST a healthy diet, not to REPLACE one. So:

      > Calcium (bone growth and strength, reduce osteoporosis)
      > Evening Primrose Oil (can ease PMS)
      > Fish Oil (omega-3 and 6)
      > Iron (loose a lot during menstural cycle)
      > Vit. B12 (especially if you don't eat much meat)
      > Zinc (great for skin and healing)
      > Vit. C (helps body asorb iron)

Not sure of any others, but these are the ones that I know of as being some of the most beneficial.

  31. QUESTION:
    What's the best supplement for women's well-being?
Recently, well a few months now, i've been moody tired often, my mum puts it down to my late period. I've seen so many ad's on TV about womens well-being supplements etc but never really taken any notice, I'm 17 years old and was wondering whether you'd reccommend any ideal supplements? I've tried Boots website but I don't understand the variety and what they all mean.

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Womans supplements arnt the cure for being moody and tired. These symptoms (fatigue and late period) may be down to something else, such as a fever, or maybe an unbalanced diet. The best way to cure this would be to eat a balanced diet, without having to take any supplements at all. Why don't you just eat the real deal, instead of some fake stuff? It's much better for you.If you are only taking supplements and not eating food, then this is VERY dangerous for your body - it will loose its ability to take the nutriants out of food, and will rely on tablets to provide it with neccesarry nutriants. This can cause serious problems in the future. The practice of relying on the supplement to make up for poor eating habits and choices can also be problematic because vitamin supplementation is not considered to be an adequate substitute for a good diet.

It's okay to take a supplement as an extra boost to your daily diet but only if you are eating properly. You may be lacking in iron and fitamin C - iron can be found in fish, meat and vitamin C in fruit and Veg. Maybe with a balanced and healthy diet you will have your period and become more awake, lively and enjoy life

  33. QUESTION:
    Workout supplements for women?
I am overweight by 20lbs... all of which I gained in literally 4 months!!! I increased my exercise last month, but while my husband says my legs are toner, I can't fit into any of my favorite pants still. I'm starting the "slow carb" diet today for 30 days, and increasing my workout routine to 6 days a week with one rest day. Men always talk about supplements they take while they work out to increase fat burning, muscle gain, etc. What are the best, and most simple, supplements for women? It seems all of my search results come up with "fat burners," which don't work. There has to be something, right? I'm resuming my one-a-day multivitamin starting today as well.
Megan - The "slow carb" diet is not necessarily a fad diet, but I'm not sure it's something I can dedicate myself to as my husband would have to do it as well because I make dinner and he's not a fan of veggies. lol The principle behind it is that you cut out "white" carbs which are things like enriched white bread, potatoes, pasta, fried foods, etc. as well as high fatty foods and the sugary drinks 6 days a week, and in place, eat lentils and beans, lean meat high in protein, and as many fruits and veggies as you please to keep you full. You then exercise 6x a week with 1 rest day (what I initially did in boot camp, so I know it works) doing cardio every other day, and the days you don't do cardio, focus on strength training. I was hoping there would be something that would just enhance everything my body does normally, but I suppose that's what a multivitamin does, right?

  35. QUESTION:
Are there any Weight Loss Supplements for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?

    • ANSWER:
The best diet for women with PCOS is a low carb or diabetic diet. I would stay away from weight loss supplements. However, you should be on an insulin sensitizing drug, such as metformin. Metformin can help you lose weight. It is VERY difficult for women with PCOS to lose weight because our bodies work against us (I wont bore you with the technical medial explanation behind this..but it's true). However, if you are correctly treating the PCOS, then it is much easier.

There are TONS of books about dieting and PCOS. Here are a few I found quickly at www.amazon.com (there are others if you want to check out. I searched under "PCOS diet")
      http://www.amazon.com/pcos-diet-book-nut...
      http://www.amazon.com/insulin-resistance...

It is important to really understand what PCOS is and the correct way to treat it. Unfortunatly, many doctors are not very knowledgeable and do not really understand much about PCOS. I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). They are your best bet at correct PCOS treatment and any fertility treatments you may need. Here's a little general PCOS info to get you started:

The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:

      1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.

      2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.

      3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated. Hopefully you will start ovulating on your own and you will be able to get pregnant without any other treatment needed. If not, the RE can begin other fertility treatments while you are still on metformin.

      4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.

I highly recommend visiting http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhp... It is a great message board where you can ask all your PCOS questions, including those about getting pregnant. Good luck.

  36. QUESTION:
Help! I really need your opinions... "FertilAid Fertility Supplements for women & men" ?
Have you try "FertilAid Fertility Supplements for women & men" before?

I did post this question before but i still need more opinions or testimonial from you people who had tried it. btw, im ttc... i did read the testimonial from the women who tried it and got pregnant just within 1-3 months. i planned to buy it, but i want to know if u ladies tried it before and if u succeed... i need to checked it throughly since im in asia and its hard for me to order this stuff. I got stumble upon this website:

    http://fertilaid.com/default.asp

    thanks in advance :)

    • ANSWER:
Internet testimonials aren't even worth the paper they're not printed on.

This stuff is definitely not going to hurt you (all healthy herbals and non-toxic), but it will do absolutely *nothing* to improve your fertility that a healthy diet won't do for 1/100 of the cost.

      EDIT:

Cornell University obstetrician/gynecologist Amos Grunebaum, M.D., creator of FertilAid, admits that there are no scientific studies showing that any over-the-counter herbs or medicines induce ovulation, but that they may have a positive effect on fertility-enhancing hormones. No diet or supplement should substitute for a physician’s evaluation—and anyone who is taking any medication, natural or not, should always alert her doctor.

L-arginine, an amino acid in FertilityBlend, for example, was shown in one study to enhance egg quality but reduce the number of quality embryos and the pregnancy rate during IVF. “There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to herbal formulas, and the few studies out there are often completely contradictory” stresses Dr. Gutmann. Chasteberry, for example, has been shown in European studies to improve the levels of various hormones needed for fertility, but is not recommended for use during pregnancy. “Red clover [an ingredient in FertilAid]
has been shown to increase and decrease fertility in cows, while nettle leaves, claimed in one natural guidebook to boost pregnancy chances, is an abortifacient (a substance that increases the risk of spontaneous abortion or miscarriage) in certain doses.”

Bottom line: Err on the side of caution. And always let your physician know exactly what you’re taking.

  37. QUESTION:
Getting ripped? Are there any supplements for women?

    • ANSWER:
The same ones used for men. Hormones involved in building muscle and losing fat are the same in both. Nutrients required are the same as well.

  38. QUESTION:
    Women's Fat Burner Supplements?
Is there anyone out there that knows an effective fat burning supplement for women? I have a very healthy diet and great exercise routine (4-5x/week combined weights and cardio). I'm not a body builder, but just need something to help me lose fat in areas that diet and exercise leave behind. My boyfriend suggested Hydroxycut Hardcore, but I think that would be way too intense for me, maybe I'm wrong. I need something I can take at "resting", not just before I work out. Any suggestions??

    • ANSWER:
There is really no "magic"in a bottle otherwise it would be sold for huge amounts of money. Proper diet and exercise are the way to go.

  39. QUESTION:
what was the weight loss supplement for women in a clear fancy bottle?
I'm trying to remember the name of the weight loss pill for women that was advertised in all the magazines awhile back. It was a clear bottle with softgel tablets in it.

  40. QUESTION:
Is it safe to take these vitamin supplements for pregnant women even if I'm not pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
I personally take them all the time b/c they have more iron in them and I fight anemia constantly and my doctor suggested this!! However, I would check with my doctor just to ensure that its safe for YOU!!! Its always best to ask a medical professional, a pharmacist could also probably tell you!!

  41. QUESTION:
Calcium supplements for Women Under 50???
I will be 30 this year. I have recently changed to a healthier diet and have stopped drinking milk as often (in favor of water, plus, I used to have milk with cookies, brownies, etc.).

Osteoporosis runs in my family, and I am concerned that I am not getting enough calcium. Is it okay to take calcium supplements if I am not even close to 50 yet?

    • ANSWER:
I want you to know that you don't have to give up milk! If you're really concerned about the fat content, drink skim (although, I'd recommend just putting up with a bit of extra fat and drinking 1%, personally). You can also add orange juice with calcium added to your diet, as it has just as much, if not more in some cases, as a glass of milk with no fat.

As for the calcium supplements, it is perfectly fine for you to take them. I recommend taking a Calcium, Zinc, and Magnesium combination supplement in combination with a Vitamin D supplement, as all of these minerals (and vitamin) will help you to better absorb and store the calcium. However, I would recommend taking that only before bed, as it could make you a bit drowsy (calcium is naturally a mild sedative, that's why your mom would give you a glass of milk if you couldn't sleep when you were little).

  43. QUESTION:
Protein supplements for women's muscle growth ?
I have been working out for about 6 weeks now, I have gained some definition in my arms and legs but I have not gotten any bigger or more defined, it just seemed to stop even though I have increased the amount of weights I use. I need to know if whey protein is ok for women to take and if it will really work and if it could have any side effects ( weight gain from fat, hormones, and if it can affect kidneys or the heart since I have problems w/ both) I don't know how much to use or how long to use it. I want to be a little more muscular than most women, but not huge, more along the lines of figure fitness model than bodybuilder.

    • ANSWER:
Well, for starters, whey protein is just the same protein you get in meat/beans/milk/etc. It doesn't have any 'effects' per say (not counting the odd allergy), it's just food. Doesn't affect hormones and such in the slightest. The important thing to realize is it doesn't just make your muscles get bigger, all it can do is make up for a lack of protein in you regular diet.

For a recreational lifter or athlete, a good rule of thumb is around .6-.8g of protein per pound lean body weight per day, from whatever source. The often quoted 1g/day is a very generous amount that tends to be overkill for most people, but won't cause you problems. The best way to use whey powder is probably in a quick shake (1-2 scoops, ~20-40g) before or after a workout, mixed with some source of carbs (ie: juice, fruit). The carbs give you energy and help the uptake of the protein, and taking it around exercise also increases uptake.

Health wise (this goes for all protein), no studies I've ever seen have linked 1.5g protein/1lbs/day or less to any medical problems, *except* in some individuals with existing kidney problems. The issue is that the byproducts of protein are somewhat difficult for your kidneys to excrete. Healthy kidneys don't have a significant problem. Assuming your doctor doesn't have you on a specific diet for any kidney problems, you should be fine. Never hurts to check with an MD first though.

  44. QUESTION:
    Toning Supplements for Women?
I'm female,18, 5'10, and 143 lbs. I have a week and a half to become as lean as possible for a competition. I am eating very well: protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and small healthy meals for dinner. I am also hitting the gym for two hours a day: mainly cardio (running/power walking and stair stepping) as well as leg and ab exercises (no lifting though).
Normally I stick to diet and exercise but since I only have 10 days to slim down, what are some good supplements out there that would really help boost my progress? Specific names would be great.
    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Dietary supplements are poorly regulated in the US. They do not have to conform to the stringent standards applied to pharmaceuticals or food products by the FDA. The result of this absence of oversight has been a scammer's dream and the scammers have made the most of it. A huge and powerful supplement industry has grown up around public ignorance, human wishful thinking and false hope, and a lack of regulation which was designed to give people the freedom to explore homeopathic, naturopathic, and alternative remedies.

Because supplement makers do not have to follow the same stringent FDA regulations which are applied to food and drugs, it is impossible to know which supplements are scams without testing by independent laboratories. It is, however, quite easy to be fooled by common myths and expensive advertising. For this reason, supplements should be avoided unless recommended by a legitimate health care professional. Here's what the US National Institute of Health has to say.

"Always check with your health care provider before taking a supplement, especially when combining or substituting them with other foods or medicine." Ref: http://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/ODS_Frequently_Asked_Questions.aspx#Need

Many manufacturers buy cheap supplements from foreign countries with no regulations which contain toxins and poisons including heavy metals, pesticides, detergents, etc. Others add stimulants such as caffeine to an otherwise worthless product to provide the hapless buyer a sense that the product is doing something. Still others cut the supplement with fillers so only trace amounts get to the customer keeping their cost down so they can put more money into garish and bloated advertising which promises what they know they can’t deliver. For these and other reasons you cannot know what you’re getting when you buy a supplement. As an example, go here http://ftcsearch.ftc.gov/search?q=weider&btnG=Search&entqr=0&ud=1&output=xml_no_dtd&sort=date%3AD%3AL%3Ad1&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&client=ftc_consumer&proxystylesheet=ftc_consumer&filter=0&site=default_collection for a comprehensive list of entries of the legal actions the FTC has taken against the well known supplement peddler Joe Weider and his bodybuilding empire for bogus advertising and supplement ripoffs.

Humans evolved over 100,000 years without supplements by eating natural food. There is no reason why we need supplements today if there are no special health considerations and ample natural wholesome food is available to us.

Any suggestions for supplements for women?
I work out 6 days a week (a combination of weightlifting, yoga, stretching, kenpo, plyometrics and more) and I eat great...but I have about 10lbs to lose and I can't seem to get it off. I want to continue working out and eating right but was wondering if any females have any suggestions for supplements/fat burners, etc that have worked for them. I've done tons of searching online and can't seem to find anything with great reviews.

I eat right and work out, so if you're looking for points and plan on suggesting I change my diet or workout routine, please don't bother. I'm only looking for serious suggestions from females who have had similar issues.

  47. QUESTION:
What is the best vitamin supplement for women?
I am working out six days a week and eating healthy, but I am looking for the right supplement to aid to my weight loss.

    • ANSWER:
I like New Chapter. They are food based and their processing preserves much of the nutrients. They also don't pack a ton of cellulose in there, which makes it difficult for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients.

My second most favorite vitamin is made by Rainbow Light.

As far as weight loss goes, here are some tips, but you may already be doing these.
      - Eat 3 hours or more before going to bed
      - Don't push your workouts too hard. Over training the body can lead to an increase in cortisol, which can result in fat accumulation in the mid section.
      - Eat plenty of vegetables. When you are hungry for a snack reach for a veggie!
      - Get at least 8 hours of sleep. This is also related to cortisol.
      - Eat ample protein, but not in excess. A general rule is your body weight in kg (lbs/2.2=kg) x 0.08= # grams of protein to eat daily.
      - Be sure to weight train and hit the cardio.

Of course, if any of this goes against what a doctor has told you then you should listen to your doctor first.

Hope this helps! And good luck on your way to sexy!

In regards to vitamins not helping you lose weight:
Many vitamins participate as co-enzymes in body and help to metabolize fat. For example, if you wish to burn fat you absolutely need niacin and riboflavin to be able to do this. Vitamins E and C act as antioxidants and fight free radicals. When we exercise we create free radicals, so these are also important. It is also recommended that women take 400mcg of folate every day and take in extra calcium because we don't necessarily get everything we need from our food. Ideally, if you eat a perfect diet you would get all your nutrients, but you'd also need to have ideal absorption as well. Of course, you can not take vitamins alone and expect to lose weight, but they will help you in attaining optimal health if they are part of an overall healthy lifestyle (diet and exercise).

  48. QUESTION:
Do protein supplements cause weight gain in women?
I'm 5'2" and a size 4. My fitness level is fairly high and I'm hypoglycemic. I supplement an extra 36 g of protein a day. Will that cause muscle bulking and weight gain? Everything I've read about protein supplements is geared toward men. Thanks for the help!

    • ANSWER:
I don't actually know but I would assume it would definitely cause weight gain. Women aren't as good at building muscle as men. Therefore it would likely become fat.

  49. QUESTION:
Are there any supplements for woman that can help with loosing belly fat? ?
I have been eating a well diet and working out, but the belly fat is not going anywhere. I have gotten some suggestions from the salesman at GNC, and they mentioned using CLA. I also had a couple of people that suggested that Relecore. Has anyone ever used any of these products, and do they really help?

    • ANSWER:
I have heard good things about Relacore too. I heard it reduces anxiety and increases your mood. I'm not sure how many you have to take a day. That's the only problem with those kinds of pills, you have to take two sometimes three, up three times a day. Six pills a day? That's how they get you... Look for something that you only have to take one or two of a day. this site has a ton of options with detailed information on each product. http://www.paramount-supplements.com

  50. QUESTION:
With the shrinking proportion of whites in Australia are white women supplementing roles for white men?

    • ANSWER:
I hardly think it would be shrinking to any extent as all that. I'm quite sure the European population in Australia remains upwards of 80% which sounds pretty significant to me.
