    I know that exercise is the best way to reduce, but I was wondering about those programs that say you can lose all the weight and look good quickly. Is this false? For example, if a person was very fat and then lost all the weight quickly, what would happen to all of the skin that was surrounding the fat? I know that when you exercise and lose weight, your skin would gradually shrink to fit your shape as you were losing the fat, at a natural rate.       The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more variety of vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)

      Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.

      The first week is just water weight but fat is lost thereafter if you keep your calories high enough. Otherwise the body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone). The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.

      Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

      The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

      It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.

      Carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice, beans) trigger insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.

      Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salad - steaks - a huge sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & you can start making healthy choices.

      High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.

      Ground flax seed (2 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min for daily fiber needs.

    Healthy fast fat loss?
    I have fat that I would care to get rid of (who doesn't). But my question is this: I have heard and read things, and seen documentaries (FAT HEAD) that state the human body needs fats to be able to function healthily and efficiently. But I seem to have ample amounts of fat so I, personally, believe that I may just need to have a low-fat diet and exercise to use the remaining fat that I have. But will this work or should I try to maintain a low carb diet, reducing insulin levels, allowing the passage of energy from the fat cells to the muscles. Or should I try a combination of both trying to eat high protein amounts, reducing hunger, eating fruit an veggies to maintain vitamin levels, doing an intense 90 day work-out (we all what that is), and the low-fat diet reducing the amount of slow-burning fat cells to build up and the reducing insulin level will allow the already high levels of fat cells to release their energy.

    Another fear I have, letting alone the fat loss delay, is cholesterol. If that drops or raises to unhealthy levels that situation would be worse to me than having body fat percentage of 1.0 (I know it’s not possible). The cholesterol levels are affected by fat intake. So when I eat low fat, which may affect my levels severely.

    I am not scared to eat low carb because I have a history of diabetes and lowering insulin levels would allow for easier energy transfer. But low fat is beginning to scare me from heart disease.

    Will the exercise with a low fat and a low carb diet allow me to lower insulin AND maintain healthy cholesterol levels?

    Now what I would find as helpful information is experiences, foods to eat and exercises to do.

    • ANSWER:
      Healthy cholesterol levels are dependent on low triglycerides <100 & high HDL >60 & have little to do with Total cholesterol numbers. Triglycerides are created by sugars & refined carbs & HDL is created by saturated fats.

      Fructose, the sugar in most fruits (as well as sugar, honey, corn syrup & others) is the most lipogenic (fat producing) carb. Fructose creates triglycerides which "trap" fat in fat cells.

      Dietary fats and/or carbohydrates are used by the body as fuel. Carbohydrates as the main source of fuel put the body in storage mode & dietary fats as the main source of fuel put the body into a state of homeostasis (wanting to be normal). Excess fat stores are not normal, so the body rids them, but only if it thinks they are unnecessary. If the body feels it's in a famine (if it's provided inadequate calories) then fat stores are protected.

      The body is built for survival & doesn't function in methods that may seem logical. If you don't provide enough water the body will retain as much water as possible. If you don't provide adequate calories, the body will protect it's fat stores & rid itself of lean tissues which without adequate fuel calories become a unnecessary caloric drain. It takes minimal calories to maintain fat stores, but excessive calories for excess lean tissues.

      A low fat diet doesn't allow access to body fat stores - it sounds strange but only when the diet is high in fat does the body release adipose tissues for fuel (release versus force). If the diet doesn't provide enough calories some fat stores are forced off, but lean tissues are released as well.

      There are not enough calories in fruits & vegs to fuel the body. If you eat protein without sufficient fuel calories from fats or carbs, then you convert dietary protein to fuel leaving no protein for cellular needs, forcing the body to catabolize it's own lean tissues. Carbs may be optional, but fuel calories are not but they can come from fat or carbs, but not protein.

      If you don't keep your calories high enough, the body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone).

      Protein is a very inefficient fuel to use exclusively for long term & the byproducts of the conversion to fuel can be dangerous if they overwhelm the body faster than the body can clear out the nitrogen & ammonia.

      Just for example - Someone asked "what if" about a diet of 500g of pure protein (2000 calories a day)

      500g protein with no fat would be fatal. Fat is essential but protein without fat will cause diarrhea & then death. So this next bit is only hypothetically speaking.

      500g of protein only would turn the protein into a fuel source and not be able to be used for tissue repairs & cellular regeneration. So although you would think 500g of protein would be sufficient for these needs, it would be converted to a very inefficient fuel source with a dangerous buildup of nitrogen & ammonia (byproducts of gluconeogenesis). The body can handle some of these byproducts but not large quantities for long term. So in essence, all this protein would be processed as fuel and the body would STILL have to catabolize it's own lean tissues for a protein source. 100% of the protein would be needed to convert to 58% glucose - it would be equal to fueling the body with 1160 calories of carbs and NO protein (IF your only ingestion was 2000 calories (500g) in pure protein).

      It's confusing to eat SO much protein and have none bioavailable but your body requires FUEL calories (which can come from fat OR carbs or both) AND protein.

      BUT if you ate more than sufficient protein with more than sufficient dietary fat calories AND controlled carbs to less than 9grams per hour (Maximum carbs would be 144grams day or 576 calories) the balance of fuel calories would HAVE to be from dietary fats - at 9 calories per gram.

      As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow sex hormones (testosterone in males) & human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean tissue will be gained even without exercise.

      I highly recommend adding virgin coconut oil to your diet. All fats can be used for sustained energy, but coconut oil is the (only) fat that can be used for quick energy like a carb.

      It takes awhile to convert the body from being fueled by glucose to being fueled by fat but it does convert. It can take several weeks for the body to be able to compete athletically while using fat for fuel. The body does not become fat adapted though if "carb cycling" techniques are employed.

    For the last couple of months, i have been trying to loose the last bit of belly fat around my lower abdomen. and i have had so much trouble getting to my goals. The first month i had good results of about 4% body fat loss and a gain in muscle mass, but this second month especially with the holidays its been hard. The first month i was very strict on my diet, no refined sugars, watching my protein and carb intake, protein in every meal 6 meals a day, but i still had dissapointing results (slow results i should say) I weightlift 5 times a week and i do cardio atleast 5 times a week for atleast 40 minutes, and i do interval training for each cardio, but still results are slow. This last month has been harder simply because of the holidays as well as my birthday on the 30th. Anyways i just want to know if there is anything else i could be doing to hyperdrive my fat loss without loosing muscle mass. I have gone through caloric intake drops and everything and still no results, its the most disapointing because ive been trying very hard and i start culinary school next week and i know my strict dieting options will go out the window, but at the same time i feel like i should have to eat such strict meals to loose weight, when i go out with friends i eat fish and salads, and it sucks because i LOVE food. Please help! I weigh 180 and i'm 19. I really want my body for the summer as well as i want some time to put on some mass when i bulk once i reach my current goals.       You sound really dedicated so firstly well done for all the efforts you're putting in, it must be very frustrating to not see results. Firstly, you might be eating too little calories...I know it doesn't sound logical but you need to be eating exactly the right amount of calories to lose weight and it's just as important that you don't eat less as it is that you don't eat more. So double check what you should be eating on a website like the daily plate (link in source) and make sure you try to hit that number every day.

      Secondly, your workouts sound really good and interval training should be helping you a lot but maybe you need to monitor the workouts and use a heart rate monitor to make sure you're pushing yourself hard enough. You also might want to consider doing something like P90X or Insanity, although it's a bit expensive and hardcore it's a brilliant way to get your body fat % very low while gaining a high muscle mass.

    should I use creatine with fat loss pills for the gym? do the pills work?
    I am working out at the gym, have been going for 2 weeks and already getting amazing results. I have been using whey protein shakes right after the gym every time i go. i am going to start creatine next week.       Best way to get the love handles gone dispite what everyone may thing is diet. The fat burning pills will assist in this but it won't make it go away. Creatine holds a lot of water weight but a good, starting supplement. Also include some interval training such as bike 30 sec. all out, 1 minute slowly, and so on for 20 minutes, that will burn all the extra fat off as well. Also, the best lifts that burn the most fat are full body lifts, such as squats, cleans, and dead lifts.

      You can't just drink water for a week. Eat, but not too much. Do some sit-ups/push ups, run on a treadmill, etc.etc. If u have a Wii or your friend has one, play on it. You can actually lose weight by playing the Wii! If you do, then do Wii Fit or some sports games.

      That was really mean of him to say that. If he was concerned about your health, the concern would have taken an entirely different shape. Looks to me like he's being judgmental and even if you do lose weight, he'll probably find something else to put you down for. It's a reflection of his own low self-esteem, and not about you. Whether you "dump him" or not is up to you; but I do recommend at the very least very strongly letting him know that putting you down is not okay--ever. If he insists on doing so, then you probably will want to choose being around someone who helps you to feel good about yourself.

      If you want to lose weight, of course, I am sure you know all about the combination of diet and exercise that is the only way to lose weight in a healthy way. Try to get involved in something fun (sports, team games, jazzercise, etc) for exercise. In addition, be sure to steer clear of fad diets and to eat a balanced diet (fruit, veggies, protein, and complex carbs). Experts say that a pound a week is a healthy goal for losing weight: that means it will take you 10 weeks to lose 10 pounds.
