Do not take supplements during breastfeeding.

Just lower your calorie intake. That's what I did and I have lost 10 pounds so far. I was eating around 1800 calories but I have since cut down to 1500.

You need to still eat good fats like olive oil for your milk supply.

    thanx

    • ANSWER:
Herbs are not regulated by the FDA; they are exempt under the DSHEA. There are so many reports of herbs being contaminated with prescription drugs, with toxic chemicals, and with heavy metals like lead and arsenic, that I would think twice about taking them period, and especially since you are breastfeeding.

  4. QUESTION:

  5. QUESTION:
What are the best herbs for high blood pressure, weight loss, and migraines?
I am a 30 year old female. I have had severe migranes in the past, which subsided when I was pregnant with my 3rd child. After she was born, I had high blood pressure and went onto prescription meds. During this time, I still get headaches, probably a side effect, but not migraines. My blood pressure is under control, but I am very sensitive to medicines. My meds are causing me to have a rapid heartbeat. My previous meds caused me to hallucinate and have nightmares and start to sleepwalk. Other meds I have been on caused me to have insomnia. I am so tired of being under a doctor's care because it costs so much and the meds they give me always have a side effect and cause more problems. So I am looking for an herb that can help me with my high blood pressure, control my migranes, and it couldn't hurt to lose some weight also. I don't know if my problems come from a hormone problem, because it seems like it when my migranes was under control with my pregnancy. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Cherries are EXTREMELY effective in lowering high blood pressure. If you take ten cherries a day, this will work. However, you cannot take the meds and the cherries, because the cherries are so powerful in doing this. I know several people who have done this with excellent results. In the summer, cherries are easy to find. So stock up. Spread the cherries in a single layer on cookie trays, and put in the freezer. When they are frozen, put them in bags, and you will have cherries for the entire winter. Personally, frozen cherries are my favourite :) I believe cherry juice, if it is pure, will have the same effect.

For weight loss, a mouthful of coconut oil (make sure it is a good quality- if it does not taste/smell like coconut, it is not good enough) will help to balance your metabolism.

Now, for the "cure-all" -Apple cider vinegar will lower your metabolism. Straight apple cider in warm water with honey to sweeten (easier to handle than straight!) will be more effective than the tablets, but the tablets definitely taste better. Three tbsp. a day is a good amount. Taking two tablets a day in addition will not hurt you.

Apple cider vinegar will also lower blood pressure (make sure it is ACV with MOTHER) so please don't try cherries and cider together!

And last but not least, ACV will prevent/remedy migraines!! It is EXCELLENT stuff! Type in "apple cider vinegar remedies" in a search engine and see what you come up with!

Are there natural herbs or any healthy supplement that can help with weight loss?
I am interest to find out about natural herbs and supplements that are healthy that can help me lose some weight. If anyone has used somthing that has worked for them I would love to hear about that also! Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
The best "supplement" is to eat a balanced diet. Our bodies will often continue to crave food and store fat if we aren't get all our essential vitamins. We may eat and eat, but our bodies still "think" we're starving.

If you think you're not getting all of your vitamins from food, or if you work out a lot (and thus lose water-soluable vitamins in sweat), find a good vitamin supplement to take.

Other than that, the best way to loose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Try to find creative ways to work more walking into your routine - that will help more than you know! I lost ten pounds my just doubling the amount I walk each day. I go for short "walk breaks" during the day, park on the far side of the parking lot, and make sure I go for a good 20 minute walk at least every other morning when I first get up.

      Good luck!

  16. QUESTION:
Any herb that will help with weight loss?
Im not trying to lose 100 lbs, just 30-40 lbs, so is there anything that will help along with a physical excercise, that will speed up and maximize the workout, like an herbal supplement or anything else.

Anyone ever tried coconut oil for this.

    • ANSWER:
There is so much garbage out there in the field of herbal supplements, and most of them (99.9%) have no effect on weight loss, despite the claims that they make on the box. Instead, what I'd recommend is to consider the cause of the weight gain, and take action in a different way. For me, it was a mild depression that I wasn't even aware of. If that is the case for you, as it is for many people, taking the herb Rhodiola rosea on a daily basis can actually help a lot with weight loss. That's because it has a proven track record of mental uplift, and when you feel better about yourself, you feel less need to stuff your face. It also gives you the desire to be more energetic and this helps burn calories. When shopping for Rhodiola rosea, buy the Swedish variety called SHR-5 (an extract available in only a couple of Rhodiola products, one brand is Swedish Herbal Institute). I've tried several, and this one has all the clinical trials behind it and the absolute best quality. Good luck!

Yes, a lifestyle change is going to last longer.
Products equivalent to "Neutraceuticals" can be found over the counter so to speak - on the web. I've been looking into it and the Transitions Lifestyle program has had great results and offers a combination of products like "carbohydrate absorption inhibitor" which is described as:
"Carbohydrate Absorption Inhibitor works to inhibit the absorption of starch by the small intestines, forcing it to be broken down and used as food for “good” bacteria in the colon. An excellent product for carbohydrate lovers, it is a natural complement for Transitions Fat Conversion Inhibitor."

how much would i lose if i did this for about a month? i am currently 5'3 and 128 lbs?

    • ANSWER:
Um, couscous isn't a health food. Its a pasta. It's a starch. It's wheat flour.

Change to quinoa. You can find it at most stores that sell in bulk for the best price, or buy it in a box. Quinoa is a whole grain, but it cooks just like couscous or rice... fast. Quinoa has more protein per serving than any other whole grain (or pasta) as well.

What should i do about my weight? (15 and sad)

And ppl bring it up to my face too, my grandma calls me fat and or makes rude comments and so do my friends even though there insecure as shit too. When i first lost weight i ate like a piece of cracker or so and worked out ALOT. but then i stop and then before you know it I’m almost back to where i was. i eat healthy but how in America can anyone stay skinny nor to a healthy weight with all this shit they put in our food. i mean if you REALLY want to eat healthy you'll have to eat organic which is expensive or die of starvation. Plus I’m sick of being over weight. I've been over weight all my life and for once i wish my genetics would fuck off and let me be happy. I just want to be healthy. i want to have mostly an athletic build but i have did an ab lounge, lift weights and work on my thighs for weeks and yet nothing happened but disappointment. Are there any natural foods (actually natural) that help with weight loss? any herbs? drinks? metabolism speeders? so on? and as for exercising, i have no energy AT ALL nor motivation even though i do eat fruit and veg...PLEASE HELP!!

i just want to be healthy and happy, and able to stay that way with out foods fatty shit always after my body...

and i have asthma...that hates my very existance....what can make it feel like i dont have it anymore?

    • ANSWER:
I'm sorry your family and friends are so unsupportive. I think you will start to feel better about yourself if you can concentrate on losing weight to make yourself healthier, instead of others teasing you about your weight.

Organic food is good, but if you can't afford it, it is possible to find cheaper, conventionally grown food that is nearly as good for you. Try to avoid high fructose corn syrup as much as possible. It's a pretty sure sign that something is highly processed cr*p and not nearly as good for you as it might claim. Read ingredient labels and try to buy only foods where you recognize all of the ingredients.

Also, be sure to drink lots and lots of plain water (6-8 glasses a day is recommended). Water has 0 calories, but fills you up just like any other thing you put in your stomach, so if you drink a glass before every meal and instead of having a snack, you'll eat less. Staying hydrated also keeps your body healthier in general.

Also, concentrate on eating lots of plain fruits, raw or "al dente" vegetables, and whole grain breads. Treat meat, eggs, and dairy products more like condiments than the main course, and get low-fat and lean cuts. Animal products are one area where it's best to go organic and/or grassfed if at all possible. Keep apples, bananas, baby carrots, and similar foods around to eat as snacks when you get hungry.

For exercising, start slow. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for evening strolls around your neighborhood on nice days, etc. Try to do at least one thing daily "the hard way" and it will quickly become a habit. I often get impatient with elevators and escalators, actually - if I'm only going up one or two floors, I'm much faster on foot! Then do two things, etc.

      Hope this helps a little.

  34. QUESTION:
How to get in shape gradually w/o injury, boredom, loads of time?
No thanks to supplements or weight loss herbs/etc,Im already losing and controlling weight w/ no sugar/low carbs. I have energy. cannot get in exercise every day due to wrk schedule(cant change it now)I dont prefer a personal trainer. seems no matter what effort you make to "stay in shape", health experts say Oh thats not nearly enough- you need to ramp it up til you're miserable. Go uphill and faster for "intervals" or you'll get flabby and weak again. Or if you're aged 40's+? Just forget it . Weight training-make it heavier til you can barely do it. You'll get loose skin a lot faster if you lose weight now that you're appraoching/in middle age. And you must "break a sweat" (I rarely do in neutral weather even though I'm winded and working out fairly hard to my standards)or you're not doing anything. The word is out-it's impossible to"get/stay in shape" according to current standards of youth and hobby athletes.

It's all suppliments, you go in three times a week and get your dose of pills. The weigh you and take your measuremnets. They give you a cook book with suggestions on how to eat, but they don't monitor your eating habits.

My suggestion is to join Curves and go three times a week. They have a great support network, you meet a lot of great people, and best of all, everyone looks like normal people, not like Barbie on steroids!!!

  36. QUESTION:
Anybody use Gymnema Sylvestre to help control diabetes or weight loss?
Read about this herb known for being a sugar destroyer, and am trying it. Only a week so far, it hasn't busted the sugar factor, but I can really see a difference in inches melting away, amazingly? Whata ya think?

    • ANSWER:
I think that gymnema, bitter melon, cinnamon, alpha lipoic acid, fenugreek, and a few others, all help to keep us normalized. My last HbA1C was 5.8, so something I'm doing must be working. Read this for more:

  37. QUESTION:
I meed some help with weight loss?
I am 21 years old and a mother to a 4 month old. I was overweight before I had my son. I was 230lbs prior to finding out I was pregnant. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes early in my pregnancy and was put on insulin. I lost weight when I was pregnant with him. I was down to 219 at my 9 month check-up after I had him I dropped to 204 and I even went under 200 at one point. But after I went back to work I put all the weight back on. I really did not change how I ate during my pregnancy. See I am a picky eater and have been since I can remember. So instead of listing the foods I do not like I will list the ones I do eat.

I am a HUGE pasta fan being italian and all but I have cut back and even use wheat pasta.

Chicken, (not grilled chicken) either baked with herbs or lightly breaded.

Fruits I like are: pears, plums, peaches, bananas, grapes, watermelon, cantaloupes, and honeydew.

Veggies: carrots, corn. I loved carrots and would eat them everyday at work for a few weeks with a little bit of margarine.

I do not like salads because I do not like any dressings though I have thought about putting a little bit of hot sauce on the salad so it would not be so bland (on a chicken salad that is) I only eat carrots, cucumbers and lettuce on the salad along with the chicken.

and is it possible to lose 10lbs or more by may 28th with some eating right and exercising? That's the day I am leaving for vacation.

My ultimate goal is to lose 50-60 pounds by august if possible because that is when my wedding is.

Any advise on reaching my goal would be great. Is there any herbal stuff I can take to aide in my goal? I am not looking for an easy way out I am a busy mom and I believe the reason for me gaining my weight back was because when I started working again I was always on the go and eating quick meals.

What kind of exercises are good for weight loss and getting rid of body fat?

I've dealt with weight issues since I was in 5th grade and want to change my life for the better.
i meant i need... it's hard to type while feeding a little one haha

    • ANSWER:
Yes it's possible to lose 10lbs or more by May 28th. If I were you I would strive for 20lbs, since you can lose a lot of weight in little time. Im not sure about herbal supplements, but if you may you can try a weight loss pill - at your own expense. If your back to work try packing lunch with you, like two different kinds of fruit or vegetables and some white meat. The best kinds of exercises are the ones that get your heart pumping, for you walking or light jogging would be best - for a half and hour to an hour a day. Ohh, and yes it is possible to lose 50-60lbs by August - as long as you stay on a realistic diet and continue to lose weight.
      Advice?
Figure out you BMR [ Basal Metabolic Rate ] and subtract 500 calories. That's how many calories your body needs a day to lose a pound a week.

  39. QUESTION:
taking ADHD drugs for weight loss?
Alright, I know it's drug abuse but I only want to lose 15 pounds and just don't have the willpower to do it.

If I'm going to do it this way, I might as well do it right.

I'm 16 and have an anxiety disorder, I take calming herbs for it which seem to do the trick, but I can get panicky at times, especially about my health. My biggest fear is developing schizophrenia, which I'm scared may happen if I take ADHD drugs, because they increase dopamine production, and high levels of dopamine are associated with schizophrenia. My dopamine is within a normal range but on the higher end of it.

The other side effects like lack of sleep/headaches/risk of heart problems worry me too, but there seem to be more risks associated with lesser-known diet pills that are sold on the internet. I'd feel safer taking ADHD meds since lots of people take them.

Any and all answers are appreciated. If you have any experiences with using ADHD drugs for weight loss, please share them.

    Thank you :)

    • ANSWER:
That's very dangerous to do and I wouldn't advise it. ADHD medicines are like crack and if abused they can affect your heart tremendously. I know a guy that just died of a heart attack because he was abusing Ritalin and he was 24. You are just going to have to stop being lazy, suck it up and go on a diet with exercise.

  40. QUESTION:
How much does salt hinder weight loss when dieting?
I'm trying to lose about 20 lbs. I am eating small meals 5-6 times a day, sticking to lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, lots of veggies, and some fruit everyday. Little to no refined sugar. I am practicing disciplined portion control and drinking around 100 oz of water a day. I am also doing at least 45 minutes of cardio 4-5 days a week and some circuit training and yoga.

This method worked for me before with great results. (I lost 30 lbs. in 3 months.)

However, I am finding that cutting out salt from my cooking is proving difficult, as I find that no matter how much I try to use herbs and other spices to jazz up the food, I'm still having a craving for more salt.

I know that reducing sodium intake is in theory highly beneficial to weight loss, but does it really matter as much if I'm drinking this much water?

    • ANSWER:
Hi, actually the salt would be retaining the water. You are doing good by not eating sugar though.I just read an article about weight loss here is a paragraph:

"SODIUM RICH FOODS:- It is quite well publicized that sodium (salt) is bad for your health. Sodium also makes you hold additional water so you start to carry excess water weight. By restricting your sodium intake you can lose weight and improve your overall health.

  41. QUESTION:
Anyone tried Herbal Magic? Can you tell me what the "ingredients" are in the weight loss Supplements?

  42. QUESTION:
Does anyone know how I can access a private primary source biology journal investigating an experiment?
I really really need to access this source from nature.com... its the international journal of obesity..and it won't let me view the article unless i'm subscribed to the magazine or if i order it & it costs money. I really really need to view this one article because I'm writing a review on primary & tertiary sources for the experiment stating that ephedra (an herb) leads to weight loss. This article is perfect for it, but it won't let me view anymore of it! someone please help! thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If you're a college student, you should be able to ask your library to get an interlibrary loan, if your library doesn't have a subscription. And sometimes medical libraries will have print but not online subscriptions to Nature journals - our library committee vetoed many of their journals at one point just because they're hugely expensive.

Also, all articles in that journal are freely available (at least to me) if they are at least a year old.

  43. QUESTION:
Some clarifications about weight-loss...What should I do (details)?
The only way I know how to lose weight, and that has worked for me in the past is to eat very little, and exercise for an hour a day...
I know when you eat little, that slows down your metabolism...so I was wondering how I could prevent that...
First of all, I don't like eating meat...especially on a diet, so how can I get enough protein...Right now I'm eating cottage cheese with flax seeds, and that's very filling, but what other things could I eat that don't have too many calories?
At the end of my diet, I plan to slowly increase the amount of food I eat, to a normal level, so that I don't gain it back quickly...
The reason I gained it back in the past is because I overate...but over the last year I've pretty much kept my weight stable...so basically, I know how to eat well so that I don't gain more weight.
I'm 130 lb at the moments, which is a bit much for 5ft 2, so I'm planning on 115, which is what the doc advised.
Also..I'm taking slim quick :) which seems healthy with its herbs.

    • ANSWER:
Some other sources of protein include milk, eggs, nuts, tofu, and cheese. I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Vegetables have very few calories and filling fiber, as do fruits and whole grains. Plus, because they contain very few calories, you can afford to eat a LOT of them. Switch out fattening foods with these, and you can cut hundreds of calories out of your diet instantly.

  44. QUESTION:
Looking for advice on some drastic weight loss and body conditioning.?
Ok, to start, I am a big fat guy with a saggy chest and a big gut. I've been fat nearly my entire life. I just turned 24 and am tired of the way things are. When I'm doing exceptionally bad with my weight, the fat is solid. At times when I feel a little healthier, It feels like i've got a big layer of jelly around my torso.

What I'm looking to do is get into good shape. I want to get stronger, have a better looking body that's big in a good way, and have the endurance to do physical activity for extended periods. If I were to choose a somewhat exaggerated ideal, I'd say a body like a professional wrestler: big with muscles that are actually strong and functional, but flexible and conditioned enough to move around.

I am currently taking steps to get a heavy punching bag, mostly for cardio.

Unfortunately, I live far enough away from a real town that even If I wasn't poor, a gym membership is currently out of the question.

I'm looking for some advice from people who aren't looking to sell me anything.

All-around advice is certainly welcome, but a couple of main questions I have are:

What are some foods or herbs that will assist in speeding up my metabolism, or safely flushing my body of toxins?

As I am poor, what are some inexpensive places to get equipment like weight benches and free weights?

Any ideas on a way to set up a pull-up bar that won't collapse on a 400+ pound dude?

When I finally do lose a lot of fat, what are natural ways of ridding myself of the excess skin?

I know I have to change my diet, and reduce the amount I eat at any given time. Any info on foods where less of it feels like more would be appreciated too.

Also, I'm sure one or more of you have useful info that I haven't exactly asked for in my questions, and I welcome that as well.

    Thank you in advance.
Ok, I guess I could clarify this more... My intent is to get there mainly WITH exercise.

Surgery is not an option. Besides it not being for me, I don't even begin to have enough money to even think about surgery.

    • ANSWER:
Exercise & vigorous dry rubbing of the skin will stimulate new cell growth. You are young enough for your skin to recoup. Skip pull ups & do push ups for awhile. Liquid detergent bottles filled with water will make cheap weights. (1 gal. weighs 8#)

Nearly 6 years ago, I started Atkins low carb way of eating to just quit gaining weight. I had to get my out of control appetite under control. I never imagined I could LOSE weight without hunger or exercise, since I've become disabled. I never bothered weighing or measuring til I'd noticed that my clothes got huge quick. When my health improved dramatically also, I knew this was my new way of life and since it's eat all you want (of low carb foods) I know I can do this for life.

My personal carb level is low. I am older & disabled & don't move much (or cook much) but I eat all I want of meats, eggs, cheeses, yogurt, fats, green vegetables, almonds, berries, flax seeds, chia seeds, shirataki noodles and other foods. Someone active would have a MUCH higher carb level & can usually include all fruits, beans, whole grain products but not sugar & highly refined carbs in unlimited amounts. As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories.

Overweight & obese people have blood sugar & insulin dysfunctions and can NEVER eat carbs as someone with a functioning body can. They make the mistake of going back to the way of eating that made them fat and that is not possible and yes they will gain all weight back if they eat what they ate that made them obese originally. Insanity is defined as doing the exact same thing, in the exact same way and expecting different results. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar & maintain weight or health.

You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)

Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.

The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.

Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin which can store the calories eaten into fat. The more protein the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase muscle mass with high HGH levels.

Ground flax seed (2 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 minutes. Suggested for daily fiber needs.

  45. QUESTION:
What would be the best vitamins to take to promote a healthy lifestyle and weight loss?
I have been doing some research lately on vitamins and such to better my lifestyle. I have also been wanting to lose some weight for summer. Im about 5'2 and weigh 130-135 pounds.
Im a little curious about certain vitamins and such that can be taken together.
I was going to purchase a sea kelp supplement which aides in iodine consumption which is made by Nature's Herbs.
A fish oil supplement by optimum
a biotin supplement (for hair and skin) by MRM
and a daily vitamin such as something like women's one a day as well as a calcium supplement since im lactose intolerant.
Can all these be taken together?

and my other weight loss herbs because i am not going under full anethesia, However, I am reading otherwise?
Sedation through IV, he said i will be awake but prob wont remember much

    • ANSWER:
      Listen to your Doctor.
You are very likely being put under a mild sedative for the procedure.
If so, this is NOT a general anesthesia.
General Anesthesia is just that....it anesthetizes the body including your breathing and so they attache you to machines to prevent respiratory arrest and the machine will breathe for you.

Gen. Anesthesia would prohibit many medications.
But a local anesthesia has nothing to do with your breathing UNLESS you have severe reaction to it.
Sometimes a little knowledge can be dangerous.
You are very likely reading too much into what ever material you are researching. Tell your doctor all your medications and he is the best source of information regarding your case.

      Good luck

Looks like a vegan or vegitarian diet with the exception of the soured dairy products. But it looks healthy enough. Make sure to take a multi vitamin to make sure your getting all the vitamins and minerals you may not get with doing this or any other diet. Let me know if it works.

  48. QUESTION:
Cheap/healthy/weight loss? Will choose best answer!?
Please let me know if this is ok? I try to learn a lot about healthy stuff and I think I know a lot, but I'd really like some opinions. :)

After waking up, stretching, and drinking a glass of water.
Breakfast- 1/2 cup of oatmeal (1/4 cup steel cut oats, water, splenda, cinnamon.)
1/2 cup Kefir low fat pomegranate smoothie.
1/2 cup frozen organic strawberries, raspberries and blackberries (I prefer frozen for the long shelf life, cheap price at BJs and the illusion that I'm eating some kind of ice cream or icy, they're so good!)
Two cups of coffee with just enough splenda to mask the bitterness and a dash of Land o Lakes half and half. I drink another glass of water before each cup. Coffee makes me thirsty.

Lunch- plain tuna sandwich (1/2 can tuna in water with two slices Giant Eagle whole grain bread).
1 cup of fresh raw broccoli, plain.
3 brewed mugs of green tea with lemon and splenda throughout the day.

Second lunch- Turkey sandwich (same bread, 4 thin slices of Hillshire Farms oven roasted turkey, Laughing Cow garlic and herb cheese wedge spread, 6 pickles).
1 cup of raw broccoli (it's my favorite).

If I'm ever feeling snacky I'll eat a little bit of raw, unsalted almonds.

Dinner- 4oz. (I think that's how much? The size of a deck of playing cards) baked boneless, skinless chicken breast with garlic, cayenne powder, oregano and parsley.
1 cup cooked whole grain brown rice.
1 1/3 cups cooked broccoli, carrots, yellow and red peppers in an extra virgin olive oil and herb sauce.

At night a drink a couple mugs of sleepy time or lemon zinger tea with splenda.

Is this an ok "diet"? A snippet of my diet history: I was extremely overweight since childhood until 15 when I learned of the low carb diet. Ate nothing but bacon, egg whites (don't like yolks), baked cayenne chicken, and eventually when adding more carbs ground beef chunks dipped in tomato juice. I went from around 350lbs. to 250lbs. I dieted on and off for a long time. At 20 I weighed closer to 200lbs. Gained it all back from not having money to afford anything but ramen, and then when I could eat healthier I had a baby, about 6 months back. I think I'm around 250 again. I have really bad skin from the weight loss. I don't have a lot of money for food but I have enough. I'm very busy with taking care of my family. I like routine in my diet. It makes it easier for me to follow and stay on track. I've read a lot about "super foods" and spices that help, like cayenne, garlic, green tea, olive oil, and cinnamon. One of my questions, is that enough fruit? I know it's recommended to have more but it does get pricey. Might be doable if I need more. I walk a few times a day with my son in his stroller, about an hour and 1/2 total or more if I can. I do stretches for half an hour every morning and sometimes at night. I drink lots of plain, cold water, over the eight 8oz. cups some people recommend. I take a prenatal vitamin and fish oil type combo everyday (I had a lot left from pregnancy and breastfeeding the first few months), along with two fenugreek and one milk thistle pill. I don't add sugar, salt or butter to anything. I avoid trans fat and hydrogenated oils. I know a lot of people don't approve of splenda but I am a fan, and it's pretty cheap at BJs wholesale club. I am open to trying something new. I like a lot of bland foods. The only thing I cannot stand eating are chunks of onions. I hope to lose some weight over time and set a somewhat good example for my son. :)

    • ANSWER:
Anyone that has been 100+# overweight is more than likely insulin resistant. Anyone that is insulin resistant, their body no longer processes carbs any more. Carbs in a functioning body goes to muscles for burning. Long term, high levels of refined carbs "burn out" the muscles insulin receptors so all your calories go directly to fat cells, leaving muscle cells screaming for nutrition. It becomes a vicious cycle. Exercise forces muscles to accept glucose without insulin & that's an option, but it requires LOTS of exercise daily. The only other option is to adopt a low carb way of eating - for a lifetime. This is a great option, eat all you want, but only of low carb foods & lose weight.

It sounds like you are avoiding fat. It sounds like you did a low fat, low carb diet at 15 - which is not healthy. Fat won't make you fat. Fat is totally benign with minimal carbs (less than 9g hour). Fat is required for energy, satiation & fuel calories on a low carb program. Saturated fat is required for the immune system to function properly, for hormone production & 50% of dietary fats need to be from saturated fats for calcium to be effective in the bone structure. Fat is required to make the vitamins & minerals in your foods bioavailable so they can be incorporated into the body structure.

As healthy as fruit may be, fructose, the sugar in many fruits, is the most lipogenic (fat producing) carb. You've got a pretty good diet mapped out above (other than the low fat levels) & this would be fine in someone with functioning insulin receptors but I would be very surprised if you were able to eat this carb load & lose weight.

The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more variety of vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams.

It takes about 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.

Carbohydrates trigger insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.

High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.

Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min. for daily fiber needs.

As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Many people gain weight on high carb, do low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb & gain weight.

Most overweight & obese people have blood sugar & insulin dysfunctions and can NEVER eat carbs as someone with a functioning body can. They make the mistake of going back to the way of eating that made them fat and that is not possible and yes they will gain all weight back if they eat what they ate that made them obese original

  49. QUESTION:
Which of Mother Natures herbs should I rub on my daughter?
My daughter has been complaing lately and I need to know which roots and herbs I should prescribe her. Here are her symptoms: fever in the afternoons, weight loss, insomnia, leg pains and fatigue.

The guy at the health food store says hemp oil, evening primrose and maka root. But he's been wrong a lot lately (my skin is still all chapped and I've been using what he said for a bout a year and no results). What do y'all think?

    • ANSWER:
Your daughter could be quite sick -- weight loss in children is not a good sign (unless they are seriously overweight and trying to lose it). The "guy at the health food store who has been wrong a lot lately" is definitely not a good source of advice. Trying to cure her by rubbing on herbs could delay doing something effective. Take her to a real doctor.
