Healthy living doesn't happen at the doctor's office. The road to better health is paved with the small decisions we make every day. Healthy people may not be very much affected by foods grown in distant climatic regions.
Everyone is so focused on fat loss and building abs that they forget they are LOSING muscle mass. Our forum members share nutrition and amp; training tips and supplement ideas to keep that muscle! Everyone knows what the answer is, and it's a little frustrating even from my point of view, because no matter how much research you do, you're going after a monolithic dogma, in effect. And dogmas protect themselves.
Carbs are actually your body's preferred choice of fuel. The trick is to choose healthful complex carbs such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
Carbohydrates are important, however it's the volume of carbohydrates that are the most important. When people are on the first phase here at the Rice House, the total calories are low. Carbohydrates include all substances which end in -ol or -ose. The diet is often very sensitive to even small amounts of these carbohydrates.
Typically, patients embark on an elimination diet under the advice of a doctor, although some people may experiment with such diets on their own to see if they can identify the root causes of their medical problems.
Food allergies can cause a wide range of symptoms including intestinal distress, heartburn , hives, rashes, and difficulty breathing; by eating an elimination diet, a patient can identify foods which should be avoided in the future.
Typically, an interview will include a full nutritional and health history, height and weight and determination of Body Mass Index, or BMI. This is a number arrived at by using a formula that factors in height and weight.
General advice was given to increase fish, whale meat, vegetable and fruit intake. Over 5 years the mean difference in serum cholesterol between the two groups was relatively large for a dietary trial - 13% and tobacco consumption was lower in the intervention group. Genes may interact with environmental toxins such as alcohol in the womb, lead, and parental smoking to cause later problems with attention span.
Raw fat is also vitally important in carnivore's diet for optimum health and performance. Raw food is full of naturally occurring water! All the moisture needed to digest raw food is contained in raw food! Raw or cooked, you should not use a meat source that will cause the breed of dog you are feeding nutritional distress.
It has been PROVEN that the differences in per kilogram nutritional requirements of the different breeds makes it impossible for any one diet, including a raw meat diet, to be nutritionally correct for all dogs.
Additional impacts on the environment from a meat-eating diet are the pollution of our water and air. All of the livestock being raised throughout the world produce enormous amounts of manure and urine, which in turn pollute natural resources. Additionally, these advocates endorse the idea that milk (after weaning) and grains were never intended for human consumption.
Add vegetables whenever possible to ensure your five-a-day intake. Experiment with more veggie variety in salads, try new vegetable mixes, include some shredded vegetables in casseroles, and add different vegetables to soups and stews.

QUESTION:
What is the difference between a health diet and a weight diet?
I know one is for loosing weight and the other for a healthier body but what i am asking is, what do you do in a weight diet that is different from a health diet?-
ANSWER:
a healthy diet is maintaining your current healthy weight by eating the number of calories you burn in a day. A weight loss diet is when your trying to lose weight so you eat less calories than you burn that day, or if your trying to gain weight or muscle mass you eat more calories that you use in that day. There's a healthy way to go about any of these diets, just depending on what your goals are.

QUESTION:
How do you think the media has affected teen health? Diet and Excercise?
Weight loss pill advertisements, diet plans, etc. How do you think the media has effected teen health? Good or bad?-
ANSWER:
I think it has made teens more conscious of their appearance. This can be a good kind of pressure where the person eats healthier and exercises or it can be bad where either the person eats too much and never does anything or it could be when they eat too little and over-exert themselves. I did read a study saying that girls who read teen fashion magazines like Seventeen, have a negative perception of their body...but, i dont know if this is really true...

QUESTION:
How can I start a fitness and health diet program at school?
I am EXTREMELY CONCERNED about all of the overweight kids in the halls, blocking my way.
They are blocking my way, causing me to be occasionally be late for class, and therefore interrupting my education.I am rather petite and feel that I am going to start lifting weights so I can push my way through.
Thank you and good day.
Wabby - yes I agree. Thank you and good day.
All - these were all EXTREMELY good answers. Thank you and good day.-
ANSWER:
Perhaps you could suggest to your principal that your school could develop a lunchtime program where students could discuss fitness and health issues. This program could also be integrated into any existing P.E. program.I think issues such as promoting good health through fitness and diet can be made to appeal to all students. Guest speakers could be brought in to speak on a variety of topics.Students could have a suggestion box and put in requests for possible topics.Does your school have an after school cooking club? This could be another option for learning how to be creative with meals that are nutritious and satisfying. If you have a written proposal to submit to your principal your idea will be taken more seriously.By the way I would omit the part about people blocking the hall if you want them to read your proposal. Good luck

QUESTION:
I want to know a good way to lose at least 30 pounds and I was wondering if anyone has a good and health diet?
I also swim 30 minutes to an hour a day and I run 20 minutes too. I was wondering if anyone had a better workout system. I can't afford a gym either.-
ANSWER:
Incorporate light lifting with a high number of repetitions. Building lean muscle will cause your body to have a higher metabolic rate and will actually in turn help burn the fat. The key to losing weight is not necesarily how much you work out, but how you fix your diet. Cutting at least 100-250 calories off your daily intake would help as well.

QUESTION:
How well do you follow a health diet?
By diet I mean the food you eat not something temporary for weight loss. Do you follow the food pyramid accurately and do you count calories?
http://www.oldwayspt.org/vegetarian-diet-pyramid-
ANSWER:
That food pyramid is not healthy as it contains eggs and dairy which are not healthy for you but more importantly not healthy for animals as dairy calves are raped in order to produce that milk and their babies are sent to be used on veal farms or as more dairy calves, while the chickens live a life of hell producing eggs with their beaks seared off with no anesthetic and the male chicks are thrown in the trash or ground up to kill them. Usually both animals live their lives in their own feces and dead animals and they always live their lives as slaves. As far as my diet goes. I don't eat ultra healthy but I do try and stay in shape and not just eat junk all the time and I have eliminated all the animal based junk years ago so that is no longer a problem. I think food pyramids are mostly just a cute picture because everyone is different and everyone needs different things in their diets but nobody should ever use animals in their diets or lifestyles for any reason. Nobody else should have to suffer for you.

QUESTION:
Any health/diet advice for someone going vegetarian to replace all those nutrients in meat?
I've been a meat eater for most of my life, and have recently for religious/personal reasons decided to go vegetarian. So far i've been going veggie for almost two weeks, and have noticed my energy levels are lower. So i'm just looking for advice on good protein (and any else meat offers) alternatives.-
ANSWER:
Eat a variety of "whole foods," with plenty of beans, nuts, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid unhealthy foods like trans fats, which are usually listed as partially hydrogenated oils. Deep-fried foods often contain trans fats. Choose margarines that use nonhydrogenated oil, like Earth Balance or Smart Balance. Although a diet consisting of Coke and French fries is technically vegan, you can't be healthy if you eat nothing but junk food. Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria, and some experts believe that vegetarians used to get plenty of this vitamin from bacteria in drinking water. Since drinking water is now treated with chemicals that kill the bacteria, it's important to make sure that you get enough vitamin B12 from fortified foods (like most brands of soy or rice milks, some breakfast cereals, and many brands of nutritional yeast, also eggs and milk) on a daily basis or by taking a sublingual B12 tablet of 10 mcg per dayIron-beans, dark green leafy vegetables (like spinach),whole grain breads, Also eat something with vitamin c when you eat something with iron, it increases absorption
Calcium-dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli, soymilk)
Protein-Isn't really hard to get, just eat a variety of foods, good sources are beans, brown rice, nuts, whole grain breads, soy foods
Omega-3 fatty acids-flax seeds/oil,walnuts,canola oil
Zinc-pumpkin seeds (best source), beans and lentils, yeast, nuts, seeds and whole grain cereals
Selenium-Brazil nuts are a particularly good source of selenium, so try to eat a couple every day. Eating a small bag of mixed unsalted nuts can be a convenient way to get your daily selenium intake, but make sure it contains Brazils. Bread and eggs also provide some selenium.
Vitamin D- Vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin, is another common deficiency in those not drinking vitamin D fortified milk. Synthetic vitamin D is added to both cow’s milk and most brands of soy milk today.
Vitamins A (beta carotene),C, K, E and Folate-variety of fruits and veggies
Iodine-Iodine is a trace mineral that's important for healthy thyroid function. Table salt is the most common and reliable source of iodine in Americans' diets. (However, sodium in processed foods usually does not contain iodine.) If you don't consume table salt, you can get iodine from a multivitamin or from kelp tablets.

ANSWER:
Make sure you are getting lots of fiber into your diet. Eating fruits and drinking clear fruit juices will help. Prunes, oranges, pears, pineapples and pretty much all the fruits have a great amount of fiber in it. Also, water helps alot; drink atleast 8 glasses of water each day because this is necessary to remove any excess wastes that is in your body.If you are used to a big breakfast everyday, then I would cut that down a notch. Try having a banana everyday when you wake up, because potassium gives you the electrolytes that you need.

QUESTION:
What does this indicate about my diet/health?
(I'm not trying to be foul here, this is a serious question)Quite recently I've found that my faeces have started to float on the water in the toilet. Some of them sink but the majority float on the surface and it often takes 4-5 flushes before they all eventually go through the U-bend. Is this a sign of a health problem or a bad diet?
-
ANSWER:
In some cases, floating stools are caused by the excess amount of gas in the intestine. This can be due to a change in the diet or gastrointestinal infections. It can be the presence of gas that makes the stools float.Mal-absorption of nutrients and fats may also lead to floating stools with diarrhoea. Excess levels of fat in the stools (steatorrhea) can happen due to mal-absorption. In this case, the stools may be foul smelling too. It may also happen that the bacteria in the intestine act on the excess nutrients in the faecal matter and release more gas, which in turn makes the stools float.
There is a lot of information on the link, too much to copy and paste.

QUESTION:
Personal experience with a health diet?
I'm an average-weight 18 year old girl. I do have a bit of a pudge, but nothing a t-shirt won't cover. But lately, I've been straying away from those cute shirts because it is getting a little worse. I have started walking everyday (I'm only on day 2, but I'm gonna keep it up!) and I have a new rule about not eating after 8. I want to have a great body again. I want just a little muscle. Any tips? I don't want anything too drastic, because, like I said, I am thin, I'm just out of shape. I'm not aiming to lose any weight, just tone up what I have. I can read the books, but I would rather go by yall's personal experience, if you don't mind.

5-8servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water a day
5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones (breakfast is the most important - make sure to get complex carbs like whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruit etc)
4-6 times a week cardio for 30-50min, light weight training, many reps
no junk food, no sodas, no alcohol, no white flour (cakes, cookies, white bread, pasta etc.), nothing high in sugar (ice cream)

QUESTION:
How Social Class Affects Diet, Health and Leisure?
The paragraph for one of my assignments was:"Social class background determines the opportunities an individual has to value and experience health. This is reflected in their dietary and leisure activities, the resources they commit to health care and illness prevention programmes, and the frequency with which they consult experts about health related matters"
But i really don't understand what i'm supposed to do..
Help?-
ANSWER:
I suggest you respond as if the last word after the closing " is "Discuss."You can illustrate some truth in this by for example getting data that show most vegetarians and most buyers of organic food are middle class, whereas a higher proportion of both upper class and working class people eat meat and don't buy organic.
Likewise you might find some data either to support or to oppose the statemnent, for example find out how often each class group goes for well-woman clinics, gets various cancer screenings, or follows a diet that is marketed as for health benefits.
Leisure activities - class and the use of gyms, health farms and spas, and on the other hand consumption of poisons such as alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs.
I notice too the phrase "determines the opportunites". If I were answering this, I would pick that apart. Class is ONE factor INFLUENCING the CHOICES people make. But it does not DETERMINE the opportunities. If even one person from a particualr class makes the choices usually made only by a different class, it is proof that class does not determine, only influence.
For example, there is nothing to stop a poor person being vegetarian - I knew one or two among the homeless when I was serving at a feed-the-homeless place. It's cheaper than eating meat. On the other hand, being middle-class is no assurance of wisdom on diet. SOME "illness-prevention programmes" such as some supplements you buy in "health shops" are expensive, but others are not. Almost anyone can grow alfalfa seeds. And more working-class people than middle-class till allotments to grow their own fruit and/or veg. Sunshine is available to all, and most people have legs with which to take a brisk walk in the fresh air. So I would answer by challenging the assumption hidden in the question that more £ spent on 'experts' and officially designated 'illness prevention' and fancy 'diets' = better health. A low-cost game of football or cricket in the park may be more health giving than the same time spent at Fitness First.
If it's still true that working-class people on average die significantly younger than those from the 'higher' classes, I suggest it may be due mainly to smoking, drinking, and pollution, insufficient time in the sun, too much beef and pigmeat, and greater risk of industrial accidents and not to the fact that middle class people spend more on treadmills and health food shop gimmicks. Check it out if you can. Enjoy.

QUESTION:
What some health alkaline diet recipes?
I am trying to lose weight and become healtier. I have been reading about the benefits of a diet high in alkaline foods, but it looks difficult to follow. Can you give me some alkaline diet recipes?-
ANSWER:
Anytime you change to a new diet, it is helpful to find recipes to get you started. Once this becomes a habit, you will likely develop some recipes yourself.Green Smoothies:
In a blender, layer 1 cup ice, 1 cup water, 6-8 frozen strawberries, and 3-4 handfuls organic baby green spinach. Blend until it reaches the desired consistency. You may need to add more water.Salad:
Any mixture of greens: spinach, romaine, leafy green lettuce, bok choy or other greens can be the base. Add to that chopped raw veggies of your choice. Tomatoes, avocadoes, cucumbers, celery, carrots, radishes, onions are all alkaline. Eat as many as you desire. Top with a simple vinaigrette made from 1/2 c raw apple cider vinegar, blended with 2/3 c virgin olive oil, and 1/2 c honey. Add herbs, spices, sea salt to taste.Kale Salad:
Kale is a dense green and needs to be worked with to eat raw in a salad. Tear the kale in small pieces, drizzle with olive oil. Gently massage the olive oil into the kale leaves. This makes them softer and easier to chew. Drizzle with a light vinaigrette, toss lightly. Add 2 cups of chopped veggies, such as onions and tomatoes. Garnish with a handful of raisins.

QUESTION:
Does WHAT you eat count more than how MUCH you eat, diet/health wise?
Is eating a lot of healthy, nutritious food better than eating little of non-nutritious food?Just wondering; the idea popped into my head a day ago while cutting up some carrots
-and I'm not talking slight differences in amounts, I was thinking more along the lines of if you basically starved yourself with like four grapes a day against eating all the vegetables/fruits/dairy/whatever you'd like.
-
ANSWER:
You would lose weight if you ate less but eating tons of vegetables and fruits would definately be healthier. The only thing is that you need to eat protein too, so if you had protein you would be all set.

QUESTION:
For my health / diet program I'm supposed to start taking fish oil, Vitamin E and Probiotics daily? good or no
Just wanting to know the benefits of taking these 3 things on a daily basis ~ I pretty much know the benefits for probiotics, helps with digestion and such, but what are the benefits of the fish oil and Vitamin E?-
ANSWER:
altho the benefits we get from such vitamins are often advertised and made aware thru different ways, still consulting a doctor is the best way. we are all different individuals and how much vit. e your body needs might not be the same as how much i need of it .
my son got sick and when i brought him to the doctor, they had to take blood from him, and there they told me that he needs so much so of iron.
with all these promotions about good healthy skin and hair we get from vit. e, there was also a write up lately, passed thru internet that those who take vit. e daily have a shorter life span. i just dont recall the dosage, but on the other hand, something else i read says that you cud start 400 mg of vit. e then gradually increase dosage. so how do we know which to follow? have your blood taken, and ask what vitamins ur body needs and how much dosage you shud take.

QUESTION:
Question for parents, please? Do you think that there should be a separate category for Teen Health and Diet?
Teens ask serious questions on adult sites and get a variety of answers that may be inappropriate for their age group. Example: suggestion for fasting diet that would be absolutely inappropriate for an unfinished growth process... Your thoughts?
Another example: A tweenie asks if she is fat. 6 out of 10 answers respond that yes she's obese. If your child uses Yahoo, wouldn't you want him/her respected as a young person and answered by people who actually would give appropriate information?
Dave! I'm copying the best (in my opinion) part of your answer here:
I personally believe that people should really behave better when it comes to others health! specially teenagers-
ANSWER:
i have this answer..
its actually copy and paste from a previous question i answered regarding the same issue, if teenagers really want a good avice regarding diet or anything.. here are some helpful steps
Number 1 Rule of Teenage Weight Loss
Eat Healthily!
Last year, a teenager came to me for weight loss advice. Let's call her Suzie. She said she was "desperate" to lose weight for her school Prom. She wanted to lose about 20 pounds in 4 weeks. I said: "Sorry Suzie, the most you can hope for is 8 pounds, maximum." So she went off and starved herself for 4 weeks. What happened? I learned later she lost about 7 pounds, and then developed a HUGE mass of spots. (ouch) Point is, when we stop eating, we stop giving our body the goodness it needs to stay healthy. So whatever you do, don't ignore your health. (BTW, Suzie never made it to the Prom.)Why Healthy Eating is Better Than "Dieting"
One of the reasons that adults experience weight problems and ill-health, is because they followed drastic or unhealthy weight loss diets during their teenage years. Dieting to reduce weight is not recommended until growth (including internal physical development) has ceased, usually around the age of 18. If you are younger than this, and very overweight, your doctor can help you by putting you in contact with a dietician who will create a healthy eating plan to allow growth to continue but prevent further weight gain. Ideally, discuss this with your parents. How "Dieting" Causes Problems For Teens
Health research shows that even a short period of very strict "dieting" during your early teens can lead to low bone density, which causes weak bones in later life. Between 12-17 years of age, up to 90 percent of adult bone mass is laid down, so this is not a time to limit your intake of calcium, vitamin D or vitamin C, all of which are essential for proper bone growth."Dieting" may also lead to poor intakes of folic acid and iron. Both these nutrients help to prevent anemia, a condition which leads to constant tiredness as well as impaired intellectual performance. If you lead a busy life at school, with exams, sports and so on, you can't afford to suffer from the ill-effects of anemia!
I won't bore you with the dozens of other teen health problems that are caused by "dieting." Just take my word for it - strict "dieting" won't make your weight or health any better. Instead, focus on eating healthy food and taking daily exercise. Sounds boring? Maybe, but it will help to improve your weight and health. Trust me.
What Does Healthy Eating Really Mean?
There is no single "healthy diet". As long as you eat a variety of foods, from the main food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains [rice, pasta, oats etc] lean meats, dairy, fats) you should get all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrition you need.Does Healthy Eating Mean That Certain Foods are Off-Limits?
No. A healthy diet doesn't mean depriving yourself of higher-calorie foods, like rich ice cream, toffee popcorn, cheeseburgers and stuff. You can enjoy these and other similar foods, but in moderation, or as occasional treats. Two Healthy Eating Habits
Here are a couple of small suggestions to improve your daily diet and help maintain a healthy weight.Snack on Fruits to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
Take a snack of fresh chopped fruit with you to school. Add some walnuts or Brazil nuts for extra crunch. More Sweet Snack SuggestionsApply the Dinner-Plate Test to Your Meals
A good way to eat a healthy meal is to make sure that half the plate contains vegetables, with the remaining half divided equally between protein (meat, eggs, beans) and carbohydrates (rice, pasta, potatoes, noodles). If eating pizza, go easy on the cheese and pepperoni, go heavy on vegetables and fruit.I personally belive that people should really behave better when it comes to others health! specially teenagers

QUESTION:
Substitute sugar bad for your health/diet and why?-
ANSWER:
Here is an excerpt from a book entitled, "Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About".
Aspartame goes by NutraSweet®. Both aspartame and MSG are
classified as excitotoxins. There are three great books on this subject.
Aspartame, Is it Safe? was written by a medical doctor. Based
on hundreds of case studies, the doctor concludes that aspartame
is responsible for many distressing medical problems, ranging from
headaches and memory loss to hyperactivity in children and seizure
disorders. Next, the book Excitotoxins, The Taste That Kills, also
written by a medical doctor, examines how monosodium glutamate,
aspartame, and similar substances cause harm to the brain and nervous
system, and how these substances can cause Alzheimer's, Lou
Gherig's disease, depression, MS, and more. Lastly, In Bad Taste,
The MSG Complex, again written by a medical doctor, explains how
MSG is a major cause of treatable and preventable illnesses such as
headaches, asthma, epilepsy, heart irregularities, depression, and
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

QUESTION:
For holistic purposes could your feces really tell you about your health and diet?
Like I understand feces (or poop for the non-technical minded) could be runny, orange, or yellow if you have diarreah, and infections usually make black feces (personal experience) but does your feces really have to be S or J shaped and a medium brown color to be healthy?Resources: Jillian McKeith's, "You are what you eat" series.
-
ANSWER:
scientist/doctors would say there is no scientific reason for looking at the persons poo to determine whether the are healthy or not.
