      You're right -- ALL the major weight loss pills are either LOADED with caffeine or they contain ephedra, which can be lethal if taken by teenagers or persons suffering from high blood pressure or heart disease. That is EXACTLY why pro-athletes won't take them. Ephedra = ephedrine hydrochloride, but I have no idea if that's in the caffeine family. And no, I can't name any weight loss or fat burning supplement that doesn't contain caffeine or ephedra (or both). BOTTOM LINE: They don't work over the long term and can have nasty long-term effects. The high levels of caffeine and/or ephedra mess with your metabolism and actually cause your metabolism to run slower after you stop taking them.       I have used and enjoy a high protein and low carb and low fat diet. I still get to eat the meats that I enjoy (most of them are very lean meats). Carbs are something that humans only relatively recently added to our diets, and now Americans tend to overdose on them.

      Eating a high protein diet will provide you with energy, and the basic building blocks with which to continue building muscle in the gym... however, you will lose weight because it takes work for you body to convert protein into an energy source.

      I eat six times a day (about every 2 hours). I learned this from an Olympic coach I worked with at Penn State. Those are not full meals mind you, but about fist size servings of protein and fruits and veggies - enough to provide a continual source of protein and energy (so you don't experience the doldrums that low blood sugar causes that is another factor in overeating).

      I would highly recommend you speak to someone unbiased and knowledgeable before you consider buying any OTC supplements.

      To be honest, i would just cut out some sugars and carbs. If you want those drinks, buy Whey Protein, but some frozen fruit in there with skim milk and blend it. Its filling and not many carbs.
      Eat vegetables, eggs, meat. nothing fatty or fried and just do some cardio. If your body becomes too dependent on just liquids and you eat something solid you'll hurt your stomache and get more sick.

      First of all, for your height and weight, your BMI is 20. That is in the "normal" BMI range. Dropping your weight to 105lbs would put you at a BMI of 16, which would be in the underweight BMI range.

      Also worth pointing out here that weight loss supplements such as Acai, are meant to be just that. A supplement to your weight loss regimen.

    I make my own carb blocker: I grind white kidney beans in the grinder until they are powder and scoop out one teaspoon before eating starchy meals.       Um, it depends on the beer content. Obviously low carb beers would be better, but I'm guessing since you brew your own, you'd know a lot more about beer than me. But the thing about fat loss is getting a caloric deficit. So if you drink beer, and therefore have more calories, all that means is you need to exercise more to offset the additional calories from the beer.

      Just wanted to say that you can buy carb blockers. They supposedly bind to carbs in your gut, and stop them from being absorbed into your body, so the carbs get excreted. I've never tried them personally, so I couldn't recomend one, but have a look if you want.

    My friend recently lost a lot of weight like about 80lbs in like 16 weeks losing about 5lbs a week. She is 31 and 5 foot 5 inches tall and started at 220lbs and went down to 140lbs she hope to lose another 5lbs and then just focus on maintenance and toning. I have seen her in her under ware and apart from a couple of tiny stretch marks on her tummy she looks great no loose skin etc.
    When I asked her how she did it she sent me this (Cut and paste from her email to me):
    My weight loss plan was real simple. I'm a vegetarian but before I ate a lot of ready meals and was always hungry so snacked on sweets and pastries, cheese and fizzy drinks to keep going etc. I changed my diet so that I ate all home cooked food, all fresh veggies, fruit, home baked wholemeal bead, brown rice, lentils, yogurt etc I had lot's of salads and indian dahls etc and supplemented my diet with a good quality multivitamin and the odd protein shake to help with muscle repair. I drank lot's of water and green tea. My total calories averaged about 1800 a day. I had trouble eating it all sometimes as it seemed so much!
    As for working out I did about an hour to an hour and a half of cardio everyday 6 days a week (which is a lot considering I was total couch potato before, but I love it now) mixing it up to keep my body guessing so one day I'd do interval training and the next day I'd do a long moderate intensity walk on the treadmill at an incline. When I got fitter I did spinning classes, which were tough but made a big diffrence. I also did resistance training with free weights three times a week about 30 minutes each time. I made sure I got lot's of sleep and had a rest day every week. I tend to put on muscle quickly so I think that really helped me to drop the weight fast so resistance training is not optional.
    I used the Sauna at the gym a couple of times a weel as well, which I think helped and had a course of 3 full body wraps to help inch loss and skin tighening as well as using body brushing and self massage with oils every day to keep my skin nice.
    Simple but tough, consistancy was the key!

      It's possible. When you are that heavy - the weight tends to drop off quite quickly at the beginning.

      You can do it if you really put the effort in. The exercise is the most important. If you just diet then you probably will get stretchmarks and sagging skin. You need to try and keep everything tight.

    I am a hard worker and trying to get on a routine or program but everything I read seems to be conflicting, I honestly don't know where to start. Weight lifting is the biggie, one things tells me to lift heavy weights with low reps, then another says low weight and high reps. What do I do?

    Here is my goal for the next 100 days. Do 2 hours of cardio per day, 1500 cal total and tone while I lose the weight. Measure every two weeks or for progress. I have been losing a steady average of 3 inches every time I measure.

    How do I achieve this goal? (how can I lose weight faster by including weights, what exactly do I do, how much weight, how many reps…etc... PLEASE HELP

    I would prefer people who have done this, I would really appreciate advice or a steer in the right direction. Also with an eating program, I’ve been having to make the best of what we got in the house, as I can’t buy special foods or supplements right now.

Other than one slice of cheese and fish oil supplements, I eat no fat. Do I need a little more? I can add some olive oil if I should.

    I have tried some diet supplements, like LIPO6, which worked, but made me jittery and gave me anxiety. i felt liek my heart was raceing all the time. im guessing this is because of the caffeine. now, i hear hydroxycut has a caffeine free version, how exactly does this work and will it make me jittery and anxious? I have been dieting/excersing and have really stopped losing weight (after losing 5 pounds).       i shouldnt be taking diet pills, becuase im very healthy in weight but i have tried many different pills that made me feel like i was going to explode. My heart was rapid, jittery, nervous. But I found just recently and I LOVE it its called Green Tea Fat Burner. You take it with food and it doesnt make you feel weird. It works great if you follow the directions and eat healthy. you can get it at almost any store that sells diet supplements.

    Weight loss, weight gain.. It never ends.?
    My diet is always the same: No sugar except for the artificial sweetner Stevia, Stevia plus. No juices only fruit allowed is green apples, berries, avocados, grapefruit, lemons, limes. I can eat any meat except for breaded ones. Not allowed egg substitutes. No dairy except for yogurt and cream cheese. All veggies except for potatoes and legumes. Only water and non fruity herbal teas. No grains allowed. No yeast allowed. Unpaturized vinegars. For oils, olives, grape seeds, flax. And only raw nuts.
    That is my diet. I am consistant with it and dont eat what is not on the list. My problem is that I fluctuate between 125lbs and 135 lbs (sometimes more weight) and every month I am somewhere around that weight. I exersize vigorously every day except for sundays and rotate between cardio and strength. My target weight is between 110-115 lbs. (Im 19 and 5'3'') Am I doing something wrong?
    I also wondered if there was a faster way to reach my target weight. I dont have as high of self asteem as I did whenever I actually weighed my target weight. I dont have money for supplements (or free samples online because I cant pay the shipping) I have considered doing the throwing up and smoking thing but I want to be healthly and those were when I was feeling desparate. What should I do?

      First, you must realize your DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, properly
      functioning, is the FOUNDATION of your bodily health. From your
      mouth to the hole at the other end is some 30 feet of passage way
      and yet you only have immediate control over the first 3 inches
      (your mouth).

      You have immediate control over WHAT you put in your mouth.
      You have immediate control over WHEN you put food into your mouth.
      You have immediate control over HOW you prepare what you put in
      your mouth.

      So long as you are relaxed, the remaining 29 and some odd feet
      pretty much runs on auto pilot.

      So the obvious questions are, WHAT, WHEN and HOW to eat?

      WHAT TO EAT: Any common staple foods which you enjoy eating, "real
      meals"; you can relax, there is no need to carry around special
      food and supplements for fear that carbs are bad, fat is bad or

      pleasure once in a while, go for it. Life is to be enjoyed! Eat it
      in the same manner as below and it too will nourish you well.

      HOW TO EAT: Now read and remember the following: Fully TASTE and
      CHEW your food until it turns to liquid and naturally goes down
      through involuntary swallowing. Relax, about this stuff, this will
      all become natural with practice. Also, while you are eating,
      maintain an ATTITUDE of CHEERFUL CONFIDENCE that the food you eat
      and the method by which you eat it will thoroughly nourish your

      Acai is a favorite berry to eat and to flavor ice-cream with in Brazil...if it worked as a "weight loss aid" (or as a "cancer cure", the other scam it get used in) then Brazilians would be thinner on average (and have less cancer) than everybody else, right?

    Share Some Weight Loss Tips / Hints / Stories With Me?
    Alrighty, so I've been meaning to start a diet and though I've done a couple of successful ones in the past, I'd like tips on how to start over again, because I'm lacking the motivation to stick to one this time for some reason.
    I gained 50lbs. after I started dating my fiance- according to friends I just got 'fat and happy'- but I'm really beginning to have trouble with the immense weight-gain and want to reach my goal weight within around 6 months, if possible.

    The most weight I've read about someone losing in a month is about 16-17lbs, which I'd love to be able to do.

    Anyways, I'd love some tips on things to do, what not to do, things to or to not eat, exercise routines that might work, etc. (Also, please note that I am a college student who is a student full time and I also hold a job, so devoting intense time to a gym would be difficult. I really need exercise ideas that would be easy to do in a dorm room in minimal space)

    Also, though I'm wary of supplements and pills, if you've taken a medicine or herbal remedy (teas, etc) that helped you to lose, let me know about those too!

    hi all...ok im on a diet plan (my own) and trying to lose weight and get toned (not big). this is what my plan consists of:

    Food: I try to keep my calorie count at about 1200 a day which includes protein shakes, chicken/fish for lunch and veggies; i try to have about 5-6 "meals" a day, the only sugar i have is that in the food i eat (no candies, soda, etc) and i have one off day during the weekend where i can have a few regular snacks..

    As far as exercising: i do about 15-20 mins of cardio every morning (Tae-bo) and 5-6 times a week during the night, i do lifting with my bowflex at home gym. I started off with the lowest level (15lbs on each, lol i know) and am up to 40lbs on each and am gradually increasing.

    SOOO...my question is that i lost 10lbs within the first 1.5 weeks, which i believe is just excess weight but now its been more than a month and i cant seem to be able to go under the 10lbs, granted i had some extra off days during the holidays but still. Can someone tell me what i am doing wrong? is there something i should/shouldnt do? Should i be taking some weight loss supplements as well..any suggestions? please give me advice because i really want to tone up and be healthy! ALSO, do you think the bowflex and some free weights is good to get toned? (the bowflex weight goes up to 200lbs for the resistance)

      You might not be losing weight for a few different reasons:
      1) you are consuming "hidden" calories somewhere. This can happen when you have snacks or drinks that you don't count that have a lot more calories than you think, or if you are serving yourself "portions" that are actually much bigger than a real portion - in other words, actually consuming more than the 1200 calories each day. Only you can check on this. If you are not sure, keep a calorie diary for a few days and weight and measure everything to find any hidden calories.

      2) You could be building muscle. This is good, and if this it the cause, you will start losing weight soon.

      3) You might just be on a plateau. These really do happen, contrary to scientific explanation. Your body is instinctively trying to hang on to your survival fat stores (gosh dangit). Keep exercising as much as you can, keep steady on the calories (maybe even increase them a little - 1200 is pretty low) and don't give up. Stay on program and you should see a drop soon.

    Weight Loss Has Stalled. How to Get it Going?
    Hi! I am a 5'9" female who weighs 160 pounds. I would like to lose another 20 or so. I lost ten pounds in a month eating low carb, but that was months ago and I have been pretty good at sticking to low carb since then, but have experienced no more weight loss. I started taking phentermine about two weeks ago. I eat low carb, eat sugar-free, drink lots of water, take supplements, and use an infrared sauna. I am going to start incorporating more exercise into my life, but what can I do diet-wise to start losing more weight? I am also watching my calories. I'm getting really frustrated about this! I just have a little more weight to lose and just WANT IT GONE!

    • ANSWER:
      AT 5'9" 160# you are in the middle of the range for normal weight. Atkins program will only cause loss of excess fat stores & will add lean tissues so you may not lose any weight according to the scale. Atkins program will not allow you to get underweight. Do not use a scale that doesn't measure body fat to measure progress. Measure everywhere, if you are getting smaller, it is working.

      "Watching my calories" usually means I've lowered my calories which shuts the metabolism down. It's very important in a low carb way of eating to eat enough calories.

      Phentermine is an appetite suppressant. Low carb done right is a natural appetite suppressant. The difference is the drug allows you to not hear when true appetite asks for nutrition & if ignored, shuts down the metabolism.

      I would suggest not taking the drug. Increase your calories - make sure you add calories to cover your exercise expenditure. Increasing your fat ratio to over 80% of total calories will maximize weight loss. You don't mention your carb levels or how they have progressed - you may need to drop them lower but I would suggest at first increasing them 5g for a week. If you don't lose weight after raising calories, fat grams & carbs then you can lower them.

      There is no reason to ever go off a low carb way of eating, you slowly re introduce carbs to your way of eating & as long as you don't exceed 9grams of carbs an hour (144 carbs a day) you won't trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone) no matter the calories. Most of us do low carb most of the time & if we cheat & slip back into low carb the next day.

      The rungs to reintroduction of carbs in 5 gram units - all available to very active people in as little as 11 weeks. Make sure you do them in order & you can skip a rung if you do not intend to include it in your permanent way of eating, such as the alcohol rung.:
      * (minimum week 3 - maximum 25grams day) Acceptable vegetables, larger quantities
      * (minimum week 4 - maximum 30grams day) Add 5grams Fresh cheese
      * (minimum week 5 - maximum 35grams day) Add 5grams Nuts and seeds
      * (minimum week 6 - maximum 40grams day) Add 5grams Berries
      * (minimum week 7 - maximum 45grams day) Alcohol can be added if desired
      * (minimum week 8 - maximum 50grams day) Add 5grams Legumes
      * (minimum week 9 - maximum 55grams day) Add 5grams Other fruits
      * (minimum week10 - maximum 60grams day) Add 5grams Starchy vegetables
      * (minimum week11 - maximum 65grams day) Add 5grams Whole grains
      If you are continuing to lose or maintain (whichever is goal) in week 12 & beyond, you continue to add 5grams a day per week til you reach your personal carb level.

      You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

      Your body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow your metabolism to compensate and store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering your calories, it will continue lowering that set point, til you can survive off nothing and store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of food.

      The core of the Atkins program is converting your body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). You need to keep your fat levels at >65% of your calories, if you don't your body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

      Carbohydrates trigger insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.

      High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise.

      Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min for daily fiber needs.

      The first 2 weeks you can have several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers and more variety of vegetables thereafter add 5 grams per day additional (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) every week. As long as you remain <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control, & shouldn't gain weight no matter the calories, because insulin the only fat storage hormone is not triggered.

      ALERT!!! Total Scam!!!!! I did a trial, and canceled within the specific time as per the instructions, and got up today to find an unauthorized deduction from my bank account. I called, and after 30 min of being on hold, raised ever-lovin' h-e-double hockey sticks!!!!!! They agreed to refund the change and "officially" cancel (whatever that means) any further charges. I have since filed complaints with the better business burean in Reno, NV, and contacted my local bureau to alert ANYONE that I can in hopes the same does not happen to them!!!!!!!!!!! As far as the product itself......felt like taking down six straight shots of expresso in 2 seconds! Made me really jittery/shaky, at that was IT.

    Im 26 yr old guy, beginning about 2 months ago for the first time in my life i noticed that i can start seeing my scalp through my hair in the light!!! prior to this i had lost 50 lbs within id say 10 - 11 months..(vigirous excercise, supplements, not eating as much junk, etc). wel i feel great because of that, but now my hair is thinning on the top and im really scared that it wont grow back!

    could this rapid weight loss have caused this hair thinning ?? or do u tink i was going to lose my hair anyways and coincidentally it just started showing a few months after all my weight loss??

    TIMELINE: (25 years old) i started actively trying losing weight. 11 months later i am 50 lbs lighter (from 185 now at 135). about 3 - 4 months later i start noticeing this thinning on the top of my head (for the first time in my life). ive never had issues with hair thinning EVER before (im 26 now), and i dont know if it runs in my genetics because i was adopted.

    So will i be lucky and it will start growing back to its original fullness? or am i SOL?/ im really scared ive always had a full head of hair but now its sort of noticable! it comes out when i am in the shower , shampooing it, running my hand through it..when i go to style it etc..
    i have dyed it before on a semi regular basis but now i dont. i also put a little gel in it. but again, ive never had this problem in all 26 years of my life up until 3 months ago when i began noticing this. if this is the sacrifice i have to make for the weight loss..then id rather be 180 lbs like i was b4 and get my hair back!! im 5' 9' and asian too. please tell me that this is only temporary and its going to grow back, im only 26! oh and one more thing i was unders a lot of stress during that time period of weight loss to but i have been stress free for months now ..

      I started losing my hair after a rapid weight loss at about your age and I am female, so yes it can happen. Once I started eating better ( not dieting as much ) my hair came back, but it took a long time

      ok I didn't read all that you wrote but there is no direct link between hair loss and diet if you had a healthy diet ie exercising and eating well.
      If you been starving yourself and eating only poultry it's normal that your body lacking vitamins make you have hair loss. Go get some vitamins at pharmacy, there are special ones for hair nutriments and watch you are eating, don't cut on the red meat, fish, veggies, eggs.
      Oh and I frogot to add that at 26 it's normal to be losing hair already
