I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.
First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising...
This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart.
However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I don't know if you already do this but the best time to exercise is the morning before you eat anything. That way you burn stored fat rather than energy you already consumed for the day. Losing 10 lbs a month is actually not healthy at all so I wouldn't advise continuing what you are doing.
If you insist on doing the protein shakes check into what you need to use to make this because the ready to use ones are specifically formulated ot give your body what it needs AND they do so with the understanding that you will have 1 regular meal 1 day...to deviate from that would be or could be dangerous.
I saw an 18yr old girl drop dead because she was dieting like you describe and her heart gave out due to lack of potassium.Not worth it at all.
You could contact a Dietitian they usually can go over a safe,slimming diet with you and they usually are not expensive to see.

I know I should exercise, and I'm trying to get out and walk more, but I'm horrible at sticking with exercise programs.

The best exercise that works on abs, butt and thighs at the same time is as follows:
Lie down with your hands (the palm area:) under your lower back, so as to support your lower back.Now lift your legs a few inches away from the ground. Hold this posture for a few seconds and then gently come back to normal position. Repeat this for a few times every day.
You will feel the tension and some pain in your thighs, butt and of course abs.
Slowly increase the time and/or the number of times you do this exercise.
Drink lots of water (at least 8-10 glasses a day) and do some cardio. Always helpful when you want to work out ur tummy..

Nope this won't work actually...You need 1,200 calories at the very least because the way the body works is that if you don't eat enough calories your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to every calorie it gets so you won't lose any weight. I just went to a nutritionist and she actually told me that my 1,200 calorie plan was still to low, and suggested i bring it up to 1,800...
It sounds like good food to eat you just need to up the calories.
But if you want to lose some weight before a dance the best way to do it is to stick to a good meal plan, cut out salts because you will retain water from that, and drink a ton of water. Same as calories, when you body is not getting enough water it will hang on to whatever you get causing a retention of water weight, which is what you'll be able to shed before the dance.
I know it sounds strange but drink as much water as you possibly can until the day before the dance.
Also, 40 mins of decently intense cardio a day. 4 pounds will be gone really quick i promise!

Be honest Michele said it. Although for some, it's easier said than done.Start eating better, eat less food in general and NO sugar crap, less fat and less alcohol (it's hard, I know)
Then walk/run more. Going a couple of miles, just walk it or jog I mean the weather is picking up now.
Drink water, tea, maybe (take into account the sugar you use) and avoid most other drinks like energy ones or whatever.
Also try and exericse in the morning, before breakfast ... so maybe ... get up/shower and go out for 30-45 minutes for a brisk walk then come back and eat - I hear this burns fat from the bodys stored energy 3 times faster.
Don't brother with indoor machines like bikes and tredmils they are soo boring, waste electric and expensive. I see almost no reason for them (unless it was bad weather)
Get yourself an mp3 player/ipod for your walks and they are fun themselves.

Also eat more often, instead of eating conventional meals, start the day off with a meal and continue to snack lightly though out the day, you want to have your metabolism to be fired up all day, your body will see that it has a constant food supply and start releasing your stored up fat.
Working out is not really necessary for losing weight although it's great for the mind and body. I'd suggest taking up yoga, it's really good for your legs and glut( a lot more physically demanding than I thought it would be), give girls a great figure, and you keep it longer
Don't believe people that say you need some special ingredient to lose weight, you just need to know what you're putting into your body.
