Finally, losing weight requires both exercise and caloric restriction. Since you're going to be doing both, keep the following in mind (it's what I've told people for over 2 decades in my practice):

      1) Check with your physician to be certain that you are physically able to reduce your calories and increase your exercise habits safely.

      2) Make certain that the calories you are eating are as balanced as possible. Finding out how much protein, carbs, and fats your body needs on a daily basis can really help keep your energy levels high all day long. The #1 reason my clients tell me that they've stopped dieting or exercising in the past is because of low energy ebbs. Also remember that you may need supplements to help things along.

      3) While exercising (before, during, and after) be sure to consume enough water. The key is not to be 'thirsty' (overtly) during this time of exercise.

      4) Adding weight bearing exercise (i.e., lifting weights) will help to tone your body and the thermogenic (fat burning) effect will last long after you've stopped working out -- even if your workout is simply walking).

      5) Remember that you'll probably hit plateaus (times when you'll stop losing weight) several times during your weight loss progress. This is completely normal and is only temporary but it can last for a couple of weeks at a time.       Fat burning pills work on the idea is that doing cardio at an increased body temperature shall make you burn more white fat.

      Supplements claim to statically increase your metabolism... This is usually rubbish

      Well the pill that does work is ephedrine ..which is a thermogenic... but its illegal in the US, because people who didn't know better were abusing it. Its legal in Canada (if under 8mg/pill) and you can buy it online. It's normally "stacked" ; taken in conjunction with caffeine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECA_stack

      Theres lots of claims about heart attacks etc.. but it can be used safely and effectively.. if you're already at a normal weight and are just hoping to get more cut. This is NOT for overweight people and should not be used over long periods.

      Other kinds of legal thermogenics can be effective as well .. and contain octopamine or synephrine labelled as bitter orange.. In effect these are the same as ephedrine but not illegal yet .. but the same precautions apply.

      Most supplements don't work at all.. so theres no point. Green tea extract contains catechins and does work to an extent provided you diet is good and you do regular cardio..

      Another product which does work "statically" is Conjugated linoleic acid called CLA, but this is particularly unsafe .. (more so than ephedrine in my opinion) because of the trans-10, cis-12 (t10c12)
      isomer which manufacturers include in their formulations.

      Acetyl-L-carnitine also has some positive effects... is generally very safe but not particularly effective

I currently take protein powder and creatine (as well as multivitamins, omega fats and glucosamine sulphate). The trainer recommends using fat burning supplements ,e.g. tablets.       Taking supplements and vitamins will get more effective if you have proper diet and exercise. Easier said than done! Additionally, it is important to focus on fat loss as opposed to just weight loss, since nobody has a reason to want to lose lean muscle tissue. I found out some resources that may help you.

      The biggest one is actually a mineral called Chromium (which is also in most multivitamins). It helps to boost glucose metabolism among others, so it helps with energy and is often used by Diabetics because of that... but it can be too good for glucose in some cases, so Chromium has a warning to check with a healthcare provider if you're Diabetic/Hypoglycemic.
      There is also a natural product called CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) which is a fat that helps to burn fat. It's a weird idea, but it works.

      There are other natural supplements that give energy that help you workout to burn more fat, but don't help your metabolism as directly. Also, exercising on a regular basis helps your body naturally increase metabolism on it's own. Exercising with those two supplements and/or a variety of others will definitely help to burn a lot of fat and are commonly used for weight loss.

      This ratio is incorrect. There is not ratio of muscle to fat in 'weight'.

      A 2 to 1 ratio is common with protein for lb of weight.. IE: Intake 2grams of protein per lb of overall weight.

      You see it is not 'easy' to ascertain how many pounds of muscle anyone has on their body. Obtaining how much of your total body weight is fat is easier to derive, though still not easy to get exact.

      Generally you want a low body fat percentage. This is a percentage of your overall weight.

      Example, a low body fat and pretty 'cut/ripped' for someone 200lbs, would be 10%, or 20lbs of total fat.

      If one weighed 100lbs, it would be 10lbs.. 150lbs, it would be 15lbs and so on.

      Make sense?

      Anything over about 20 percent bodyfat is bordering on being slightly overweight. Alot of guys can have 21-25% bodyfat with a good amount of muscle on a broad frame and be far from overweight.. but they won't be 'cut'.

      Someone who was to cut from 25% body fat to say 10-13% would look dramatically different...

      Every 5% or so in bodyfat is a fairly considerable change in appearance.

      But to your direct question:

      Taking a fat burning supplement can help the metabolism while putting on mass, sure. The best thing is to do a few days of cardio. You can still put on a great deal of muscle mass even if you do say, 2 days of 30-45mins of cardio.

      Couple this with a diet that has enough calories to add mass, but not TOO much that you will be adding lots of fat with it.

      It IS possible to both gain muscle mass and cut fat at the same time.. especially in one who isn't already incredibly lean. Have a reasonable and strict diet, and workout program it should happen.

      If you notice a little fat accumulation you can adapt with cardio or diet adjustment. You don't HAVE to add fat for muscle to repair and build itself larger.

      It is just that it is easier to eat an abundance/overkill of calories while 'bulking' to gain size and strength. Then those who do this will go into a 'cut' phase where they up the cardio, make the diet really strict and generally lose some of their mass.. but only a small percentage. There is always some sacrifice this way. The cycle generally repeats over and over sometimes a few times a year.

      Then some generally stay in good form/shape with a balance of muscle/size gains and staying at a respectable body fat percentage.

      It is a misconception, basically, that you have to do one or the other and can't do both at the same time.

      If you are a hardgainer.. then generally your gains will be muscle mass anyhow. If you are the opposite, then you should have no problem gaining size and can go heavier on the diet restriction and cardio and still keep healthy strength and size gains.

      It all boils down to your daily intake of calories vs what you expend. Simple equation. Cardio and themogenics help target lypolisis (fat burning) more specifically than just allowing the body to burn both tissues muscle and fat as it tends to do. Though we can't target JUST fat.. we can only try to keep the environment in a positive nitrogen balance, anabolic state via diet, supplements, training schedule, and so on.

    I used to be obese. i am 5 foot 8 and used to be an obese piece of shit at a weight of 210. You already know the importance of cardio, but i'm assuming as a football player, who works out as much as yourself, you probably eat a lot? and i'm assuming its not always the healthiest (especially if you celebrate a winning game or do wings + beer for sundays!). Make your diet LOW GLYCEMIC, high in lean protein and full of veggies aswell as combine it with interval training (combining short bursts of high intensity cardio with longer periods of low intensity cardio).       I was about to buy diet pills months ago, until I read that your weight can balloon to double after stopping. Best recommendation is walk an hour a day. I found that to be easy and I lost the extra weight. But the main thing is, get off ALL the High fructose corn syrup. It makes you fat because your body can't metabolize it like regular sugar. It goes to your liver instead and makes fat. MSG also makes fat and keeps you hungry, just like corn syrup does. At best, even with pills and exercise, you will only loose 2 lbs a week, so you need to be patient. But eating right will keep you slim for the rest of your life.
