My original answer was absurdly long - actually, it' still pretty long - so I'll point you in the right direction and give you some links.1.) I'm a first generation Indian, so I know what it's like to grow up with an Indian family; generally speaking, they don't help much with weight loss. Change your diet, wean yourself off of their habits, or you won't lose anything but time. Trust me on this one; it took me three years to get myself off of my family's cooking, but five months later, I'm down 34 pounds and am now at 13% body fat. (Woot!)
2.) Research stuff. My links will help with that, but you need to know what you're doing so you don't waste time like I did, or screw up your health like my sister did.
3.) Don't listen to bull. Mainly, ignore people who preach spot-reduction, the myth that you can (for example) burn belly fat by doing crunches, or lose fat on your thighs by doing squats. Weight lifting is a must, but that's not why.
4.) Stick to a low-fat diet. High-fat diets have worked for some, but as a fellow Indian who grew up on ridiculous amounts of carbs, it probably won't work for you.
Oh, and eat brown rice instead of white. It'll make a huge difference.
5.) You'll understand this better once you read up, so don't worry about being confused, but I'll post this now because it's important and you might not find it for a while yourself.
If you burn 500 calories a day, you will lose one pound a week. The way I burned two pounds a week was by eating 500 calories less than my regular daily requirement, then burning the other five hundred off through some sort of physical activity. You should, under no circumstances, try to restrict your diet by 1000 calories and exclude exercise.
And jumping rope is amazing. Do it.

I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.
First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising...
This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart.
However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace.com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. It is boring and it seems useless to do but if you get used to do it,., after just 20 minutes you will start sweating and your arm will get tired.
Just change arm and carry on, eventually it will become automatic and you might even want to progress to some dumbells, maybe a little bit heavier than the water bottle.

I have just arted watching my calores. About 1200-1500 calories a day. I try to stay closer to 1200 though. 1500 is about when I don;t loose anything but don;t gain anything either.Then try to walk, dance loft weights etc for around 20-30 minutes a day.

Snack-light string cheese, or whole grain crackes.
Lunch-chicken noodles soup (98% fat free) and a couple saltine crackers-or a lean cuisine forzen dinner with lemon water.
Snack-yougurt-dieters hot chocolate by swiss miss, fresh veggies, lettuce with Only balsamic vinegar on it for dressing etc...
Dinner-chicken, beef, or pork with wild rice or whole grain pasta and lots of veggies
Before bed snack, chamomile tea (it helps me realx), an orange and water (for my pills)
Drink plenty of water through out the day.

i was diagnosed with pcos last year ,late last year,and since then have regular reviews/etc at my docs,am supposed to go back to the hospital to see the gyno,but was put off as she offered me no words of wisdom,other than your weight is caused by the syndrome,but you need to lose it,come back in 6mths.
Doc wasn't over the moon that she'd said this,but said it would be more of a case of advice and help to me on the diet side,and any other treatment/medicines for it eg the pcos.
Anyhow,i have seen a dietician at my docs,she said i am to watch everything i eat and in look at labels and follow it by 100gms ,so per 100gms i should not eat anything with more than 10gms sugar,and 5-8gms of fat. I have tried doing this a bit but have not really felt that it will help,also not sure what the best tip is with pcos to lose weight,i have read in some places,cut down on carbs,but then i'm sort of picking at things and end up bingeing on them again,i am aware about the connection with carbs and the blood sugar etc.Anyone who is a health care professional that is able to advise,or anyone with good advice or similar situation,would like to hear from you. ok,why did the dietician tell me to eat only high bran/wholemeal/wholegrain carbs,and watch the fat and sugar but not watch the calories,she said she would not go onto that at the moment.
