My original answer was absurdly long - actually, it' still pretty long - so I'll point you in the right direction and give you some links.1.) I'm a first generation Indian, so I know what it's like to grow up with an Indian family; generally speaking, they don't help much with weight loss. Change your diet, wean yourself off of their habits, or you won't lose anything but time. Trust me on this one; it took me three years to get myself off of my family's cooking, but five months later, I'm down 34 pounds and am now at 13% body fat. (Woot!)
2.) Research stuff. My links will help with that, but you need to know what you're doing so you don't waste time like I did, or screw up your health like my sister did.
3.) Don't listen to bull. Mainly, ignore people who preach spot-reduction, the myth that you can (for example) burn belly fat by doing crunches, or lose fat on your thighs by doing squats. Weight lifting is a must, but that's not why.
4.) Stick to a low-fat diet. High-fat diets have worked for some, but as a fellow Indian who grew up on ridiculous amounts of carbs, it probably won't work for you.
Oh, and eat brown rice instead of white. It'll make a huge difference.
5.) You'll understand this better once you read up, so don't worry about being confused, but I'll post this now because it's important and you might not find it for a while yourself.
If you burn 500 calories a day, you will lose one pound a week. The way I burned two pounds a week was by eating 500 calories less than my regular daily requirement, then burning the other five hundred off through some sort of physical activity. You should, under no circumstances, try to restrict your diet by 1000 calories and exclude exercise.
And jumping rope is amazing. Do it.

It is boring and it seems useless to do but if you get used to do it,., after just 20 minutes you will start sweating and your arm will get tired.
Just change arm and carry on, eventually it will become automatic and you might even want to progress to some dumbells, maybe a little bit heavier than the water bottle.

Hi,I graduated high school at 240 pounds and at 5 foot 3 that made me about as round as I was tall. I was one of those overweight teenagers who ate anything and everything without any regard to the effects it was having on my own body. I am 17 years old, female. Prom is coming up in 3 months and I put on about 10 pounds over the summer that I want to take off plus a little bit more. I am 5’0 and 119 pounds. What I want to lose most, other than all around is my love handles, stomach (#1), butt (sticks out =/), and my arms are a little too fat for my body.I am planning on going to the gym everyday for about 1.5-2 hours and eating healthy, however, I need a little help with following it and what would be beneficial and what wouldn’t.
I went to the gym today, for the first time for this diet plan/weight losing plan. I did the treadmill for 5ish minutes fast walking (warm-up/cool down) and about 10 minutes running (not SO fast, but running) and then did the sitting bike for 10 minutes/1.5 miles. It was my first day so I didn’t do much.
I am planning on eating healthy so it helps with my weight loss as well and my face.
I plan to eat Special K cereal with 1% milk in the morning (615 AM)
Lunch at school: apple and water? If I should eat more, maybe a sandwich (wheat bread with a slice of cheese since I’m a vegetarian, would that be healthy?) (1030 AM)
100 calorie pack? Or a granola bar would be healthier? (12-2ish, anytime between there)
Dinner: Indian food, but healthy, like soups and veggies.
Snacks during the day: apples, plums, oranges/tangerines/clementines, watermelon.
6 bottles of water per day.
Not eating after 7 PM.I am planning to go to the school gym right after school from 230-3 and then come home and go to my gym by my house from 345-5?

Yes, think of it this way, instead of eating chips & soda, you'd be eating fruits & vegetables & drinking water... which has very little oil compared to junk food.
Specifically, sweating will open your pours up and you can wipe away all the oil pretty much. What you want to do after you sweat is rince your face with cold water.

Cardio workout for the out of shape:
Day 1: 10 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bicycle. (30 mins total)
Day 2: 15 minutes of treadmill and elliptical. (30 mins total)
Day 3: 10 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike & just 5 minutes of stair stepper. (35 mins total)
Day 4: 15 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bike (45 minutes total)
Day 5: 15 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, then 5 minutes of the stair stepper with an additional 5 minutes of jumping rope. (50 mins total)As you begin to get more fit, more confident in your physical health, you can begin to increase your total workouts by 5 minutes and the intensity by an extra level.

well, for me I eat a high protein and fiber diet, with an array of whole grains, legumes, low fat and non fat dairy, lean meats like skinless boneless chicken and fish, nuts like almonds, and seeds like flax and pumpkin.i eat around 5-6 times a day (400-500 calorie breakfast, 200 calorie or less midmorning snack, 500-600 calorie lunch, 200 calorie or less afternoon snack, and then a 300-400 calorie evening meal. very rarely will i have a light night snack and if i do it is less than 100 calories)
my breakfast is always high in fiber and protein with some omega-3 fat (some mornings i will have a serving of kashi go lean cereal, others will be oatmeal with some ground flaxmeal) on the side i always have a serving of dairy (skim milk or greek yogurt) a whole egg or some egg whites and a serving of fruit (my favorite is blueberries) a multivitamin and a cup of green tea.
my midmorning snack is some type of protein bar (my favorite are lunas, but i will occasionally have one of those southbeach diet bars, kashi tasty little chewy, balance bar, zone bar, or zing bar)
for lunch i have 1/2 cup of mixed legumes (edamame, chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, etc.) with some sort of whole grain (either a pita, sandwich, or wrap) with a serving of deli turkey, lean ham, or chicken. i always add a little of hummus, avocado, tofu, or dijon to it along with some sort of hot spice. i also will have an ounce of nuts like raw almond, and a few servings of veggies (spinach, baby carrots, sugarsnap/snowpeas), along with another serving of fruit (usually grapes or an apple)
then i come home from school and this is where it depends. i will go for a part-skim mozzarella stick and a serving of fruit (an orange or a pear), a halved apple or pear with either peanut or almond butter, greek or plain nonfat yogurt with some flax, some legumes, or even a small serving of oatmeal. those are just a few
and then my dinner consists of a serving or more of veggies, a serving of whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, a small bit of oatmeal, whole wheat or that plus pasta, whole wheat tortilla are also some examples), a serving of lean meat (fish like salmon, tuna, tilapia, herring, halibut, etc., skinless boneless chicken, turkey breast, pork, shrimp) or i go vegetarian with some legumes, tofu, veggie burger, or another soy based product.
also, everyday i have a 3 ounce (about 30-50 calories worth) of dark chocolate (i always do 90% cocoa content), 3-5 cups of teas (mostly green and black with a few herbals) and plenty of water but try not to overdo it so that your bladder doesn't explode. sometimes i also make my own version of cocoa, with 1 cup of heated (1 minute or so in the microwave) skim milk, a few tbsps of unsweetened cocoa powder, and a dash of ground ginger and cinnamon.
for a late night snack i will have 1/4-1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese, maybe some low-fat/non fat plain/greek yogurt with a little bit of flax, my healthy cocoa mix, or another food higher in casein protein.
i add a lot of spices like ground ginger, ground red pepper, parsley, cinnamon, nutmeg, curry powder, and others to my food to add some good quality flavors.
my days total to usually 1800-2200 calories. i could eat more because i am starting to get too lean but that is because i exercise everyday with either biking, long walks, running, yoga, pilates, or karate. i am 16 and have been following this plan for 6 or more months and i find myself feeling better than i used to.
it of course can be altered to fit one's taste but this is just how i go about it.

i go to the gym 3 times a week for an hour and im a figure skater so i train 15 hours a week.
i only eat around 1200 calories and ive lost 15 pounds. i would really like to loose 10-20 more pounds but it wont come off as easily as it did in the beginning. its really starting to frustrate me!

Do NOT take diet pills! They are dangerous!!Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me.
My pulse was up to 120, My blood pressure was 150/40, they had to start me on an IV, the did an EKG on me, took blood and urine samples, and a whole barrage of other tests.
They finally got me stabilized and said that I was dehydrated and malnutritioned. I told him that I took diet pills. When I mentioned diet pill, the doctors face lit up and said that's why. He said they can cause a whole bunch of health problems, including death. He told me to toss the diet pills or next time I might not be so lucky.
I was kept in the hospital for almost 10 hours, given 3 or 4 IVs, potassium, juices, and monitored (by the EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate machines) every 15 minutes.
Please take my story as a warning. If you seriously want to loose weight there are better ways (I know because I've lost weight after this)
The quickest way to lose weight is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohol, and sodas.
Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.
In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)
Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.
Eat 5 times a day. A small breakfast. A mid-morning snack, such as an apple. A small lunch. A mid-afternoon snack, such as carrots. A lite dinner. Do not eat any later than 7pm (6pm is better.)
Go exercise for at least an hour - two a day, incorporating weight training along with your cardio. Cardio helps to melt the fat, while weight training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat, even when you are resting. You get the idea. It also gives tone and definition. Also do a few yoga and pilates exercises to help tone those hard to reach and stubborn areas.
