Within the pharmaceutical industry, obesity is now seen as the "trillion dollar disease". That's the estimated amount of profit a successful weight loss drug can expect 00004000 to make. But are companies getting close to delivering a diet pill that really works - meaning, a pill that is both safe and effective at solving obesity? The answer, it seems, is No.
Pills To Reduce Obesity
It's true that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a tiny number of weight loss pills like Xenical and Meridia for long term use in the treatment of obesity (BMI > 30). But evidence accumulated in clinical trials suggests that the effectiveness of these obesity drugs is less than impressive. Total annual weight reduction tends to be in the range 8-20 pounds. Furthermore, the highest weight loss tends to be achieved by patients who participate in supervised trials involving a combination of drug treatment, diet, exercise and counseling. Which makes it difficult to ascertain the precise effect of the medication itself. By comparison, less well supervised obesity drug trials tend to have a higher drop-out rate and reduced weight loss. And the longer the trial, the lower the compliance and the lower the weight loss. In short, while helpful to some patients, weight loss drugs are not yet the answer to obesity, especially when factors like cost are taken into account.
Should we be surprised? Not really. After all, even bariatric surgery is no guarantee of long term weight loss unless patients comply with the necessary post-operative dietary regimen. Indeed, some obesity experts claim that medical interventions like drugs and surgery are almost by definition doomed to failure, for the simple reason that they take control and responsibility away from patients. According to this view, it is only when patients accept full responsibility for their eating habits and lifestyle, that they have a real chance of achieving a normal weight in the long term.
Unfortunately, this view satisfies no one! It doesn't satisfy the pharmaceutical companies, who need to make money. It doesn't satisfy doctors, who need to give hope to their overweight patients, and it doesn't satisfy consumers who want instant weight loss without having to change their eating habits. In short, there is an overwhelming demand for an obesity pill, but a viable product has yet to emerge.
Pills For Cosmetic Weight Loss
Demand for diet pills is not limited to those suffering from clinical obesity. Millions of consumers with less than 40 pounds to lose take non-prescription pills to burn off body fat or increase their rate of weight loss. According to a study conducted by the University of Michigan, almost 25 percent of girl students turn to anorectic diet pills when they're trying to lose weight, including laxatives and diuretics.
These non-prescription pills are more difficult to evaluate, as they are not subject to the same high level of regulation as prescription-only drugs. Thus not all ingredients need to be tested, dosages and other labeling requirements are less stringent, and reporting of "adverse events" or health problems is not mandatory. Furthermore, few long term clinical trials are conducted on non-prescription pills, so hard evidence as to their safety and efficacy is scarce. Meantime, the huge profits to be made from these weight loss products means they can be supported by expensive advertising campaigns to increase consumer acceptance, making regulation and control even more of an uphill struggle. Indeed, the FDA has found it almost impossible to ban over-the-counter diet pills, even after reports of illness and injury.
Herbal Diet Pills For "Healthy Eating"
The past five years has seen a huge rise in sales of herbal diet pills, which are marketed as a form of "healthy eating". These herbal supplements typically include a variable combination of vitamins and other active ingredients which supposedly offer a healthier type of weight loss. Such claims are not generally supported by clinical evidence, and some suppliers are under investigation by both the FDA and FTC. Nevertheless, rising demand for these herbal weight loss pills is yet another confirmation of our huge appetite for what is essentially a non-dietary approach to weight control.
How Do Weight Loss Pills Work?
In simple terms, weight loss pills are designed either to alter body chemistry in order to reduce appetite, or to interfere with digestion in order to reduce calorie absorption. Appetite suppressants include amphetamine-like stimulants such as ephedra, or pills to increase serotonin or norepinephrine levels in the brain. Pills that interfere with the digestive system include fat-blockers (lipase inhibitors) like Xenical and chitosan, carb-blockers, and very high fiber bulking agents such as glucomannan.
Are Weight Loss Pills Safe?
Obesity drugs are generally safe when used correctly and under medical supervision. The trouble starts when users do not follow the manufacturer's instructions. Adverse health events for these pharmaceuticals include heart or blood pressure problems and strokes, as well a range of less serious complaints. The same applies to non-prescription diet pills, whose adverse health effects include high blood pressure, heart palpitations, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, insomnia, intestinal blockages, anxiety and depression. In extreme cases, both prescription-only and non-prescription pills can cause life-threatening conditions. Even so, safety remains a relative concept. Cigarettes, alcohol, cars and stress kill millions of people every year. By comparison with these things, diet pills cause far fewer "casualties", and if you consult your doctor before taking them, you can reduce the health risk to a minimum.
The Real Problem With Weight Loss Pills
The biggest problem about relying on drugs and supplements to lose weight is not health, it's reliability. In my 20-odd years of dealing with overweight individuals and their families, I have yet to hear of anyone who achieved and maintained any significant weight loss by using pills. But I have met a huge number of people whose weight and emotional state of mind had been significantly worsened through the use of pills. They were afraid of food, they had absolutely no confidence in their ability to make sensible food choices, and tended to rely on purging, laxatives and similar products to control their eating habits. One client - a former annual weight loss winner with one of the major dieting companies - had been fed deliberately with pills in order to achieve the weight reduction that the organization required. When she came to me for help, she had regained 70 pounds of her original weight loss. In short, relying on pills for weight control can mess up your body and your mind.
The Small Print Says It All
Advertisements and infomercials for diet pills are dominated by headlines like: "Effortless Weight Loss" or "Lose Weight While You Sleep!" and so on. But the small print often tells a different story - either that users should follow a calorie-controlled diet, or only eat at certain times of the day, or stop eating certain high-calorie foods, or some combination of all three. There may also be a reference to the need for exercise. In other words, if you want the truth about a weight loss pill, check the small print. Because, as all obesity experts and dietitians will tell you, no long term reduction in weight is possible without controlling energy intake and expenditure.
If You Must Take Pills
Whether you are a diet pill addict, or just an occasional user, here are two ways to make weight loss easier. Look for a healthy, gimmick-free diet, and follow it as carefully as you can. In the process, focus on healthy eating rather than calorie reduction. Aiming to eat healthily is much more positive than calorie control. Secondly, join an online dieting forum and get encouragement and advice from other people. Because all surveys show that losing weight is a lot easier when you have others to lean on. My own forum for instance includes a large number of former diet pill users who are now enjoying their food and losing significant amounts of weight in the process. Which proves that when it comes to weight control, people power is much more effective than popping pills.

QUESTION:
is there any safe weight loss pills for teens?
im 14 and 6ft and weigh like 176 and im tryin to loose some weight. are there any weight loss pills that are safe for me?-
ANSWER:
I will say this: Most "weigh loss pills" are just heavily concentrated doses of caffeine. Taking one is like drinking 3 cups of coffee right in a row. I really don't think that is what you are looking for.You want to either re-start your metabolism (which is the body's way of burning fat) but you are only 14 so I don't think it would have stopped or slowed that much. Maybe it's just on hiatus. There are 2 things to help do this:
1) Eat healthy. Get rid of candy/junk food/soda/bread. Water should be mostly what you drink. Add in some fruit juices every so often, but don't go nuts with fruit juices because they contain a lot of sugar. In terms of bread, bread is just a lot of carbs/calories. So cut down on it, IE: Instead of a sub, get a wrap. They also make these things now called "Sandwich flats, or sandwich rounds" that are perfect. And NO WHITE BREAD, make sure you go wheat or whole grain. The meals you eat should also be small, maybe like five small meals a day to keep your metabolism going. Though I know that is tough at school
2) Work out. Don't sit around playing X-Box like I did. Get up and do something, jog, play some sports (like find out if your school has a Volleyball team, Vball is really fun and if you are 6ft, you will have an advantage.)
But here is the trick about the working out. The weigh loss pills are supposed to give you energy so you actually do work out. But the energy they give you is so much, so sudden and so unhealthy, that it sometimes has the adverse effect. Instead of weight loss pill, you should consider something like a fitness smoothie. These are low-carb (which means they won't add a lot of weight) and high protein, which means you'll get energy. The ones I use really work and they give me lots of energy and they taste great. Here is the link to them in case you are interested:

QUESTION:
Are water weight loss pills safe? Can water weight loss pills be the effective step to reduce body weight?-
ANSWER:
There's a book called eat right for your blood type. It's a diet but not a fad diet. The author claims that because blood cells have proteins on them and can reject organs of another blood type, then blood cells also reject foods in the same manner. Peter D'adamo put the main components of foods into each blood type and observed what occur. Some foods clumped up in some blood types while being absorbed and metabolized by other blood types. If a food is beneficial for you the blood cells use the nutrients. If a food is bad for your blood cells they clump up and you store it as fat and this causes disease. D'adamo made food list of each blood type's beneficial, neutral, and foods to avoid. I have polycystic ovarian disease and diabetes. I'm 150 right now, but when I was at my sickest I was 190lbs because of my disease. A doctor told me to go and get that book and just work on eating from the list that my blood type likes the most. I droped 40lbs in six months without dieting. I ate as much as I wanted, but I was careful to stay away from foods on my blood types avoid list. At the time, I was to sick to exercise. I swim a mile everyday now. Swimming is a great way to exercise. I'm not strict on myself. I just make better choices. and sometimes I do have a few things from the avoid list. You dont' have to buy the book now. Go to Peter D'adamo's website, click on typebase4 food values. You can then click on any food you want and find out if it is beneficial or harmful to you on the page. Ask your parents what your blood type is and give it a try. The Blood type method is something that has changed my health for the better. I feel so much better when I eat the foods on the beneficial list, and my diabetes is under control. D'adamo uses food as medicine to heal the body. Look into it. By the way, I take diuretics because of a disease that I have, and short term it may help a little however you'll gain it back as soon as you quit taking them. Long term use and they dont' work at all.

QUESTION:
Are there any weight loss pills safe to use while breastfeeding?
What about Hoodia? Does anyone know??-
ANSWER:
Treatment for Excessive Fat and Weight :-
PHYTOLACCA BERRY's Mother Tincture is perhaps the safest and sure fire way of loosing excessive fat around abdomen. With Phytolacca Berry once you loose the excessive fat and weight you don't get it back because you body takes care of itself after that and keeps you from gathering up excessive fat. It is prescribed after having a baby too, to get the tummy to loose its flab and to make it flatter and tighter. And after loosing weight with this you don't get flabby it tightens up the flab and skin along with helping your body to shed the excessive accumulation of fat around the girth
The dosage is 15 to 20 drops of the tincture in half a cup of hot water thrice a day half hour before or after meals.
Avoid Chocolates, Coffee, Mints, Red Meat and Carbonated and Alcoholic drinks while taking Homeopathic Medicines. You have to take it for at least 30 to 45 days after that you start to feel the results.
To the best of my knowledge its the safest and the most sure fire way of loosing fat and weight and keeping it of for keeps. Excellent remedy for Obese people who cant seem to shed weight despite trying.
Homeopathic Remedies can be found at all Major Herbal Stores or could be bought on line, In most of the world Homeopathic remedies are quite cheap and easy to find and they do not need a prescription. Its totally safe for nursing Moms and is recommended for post natal flab and weight.
Take care and God Bless !ATTENTION :- Please give a valid and working email ID if you want a reply to your email queries lots of people send me mails which can not be replied to. So please validate your email address before you send me an email. Thank You

I used to use Lipo6x while I worked out and got a little energy boost, not much fat loss. I wouldn't recommend using them, just eat healthy and exercise and you'll get to where you want to be. Drink some black coffee or tea on an empty stomach 1st thing in the morning and walk or run if you wanna burn optimal fat, at least you'll have some antioxidant support and not dangerous chemicals.

QUESTION:
Are there any weight loss pills that are safe to take with a heart problem?
I was diagnosed with a mild heart problem (more specifically in the pulmonic valve) and sometimes have irregular heartbeats. I have been told that pills like Hydroxycut will worsen the problem, but I was wondering if there are any out there that are natural and safe? I eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly, but my weight is stuck at 137 and I'm 5'7". This is not comfortable for me and I want to lose about 10 pounds. I'm 22 and I feel like my metabolisim is slowing down. Any advice?
Thanks to everyone who has answered so far!!-
ANSWER:
DO NOT TAKE DIET PILLS! They are dangerous!!Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills (Leptopril -does not contain ephedra) on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me.
My pulse was up to 120, My blood pressure was 150/40, they had to start me on an IV, the did an EKG on me, took blood and urine samples, and a whole barrage of other tests.
They finally got me stabilized and said that I was dehydrated and malnutritioned. I told him that I took diet pills. When I mentioned diet pill, the doctors face lit up and said that's why. He said they can cause a whole bunch of health problems, including death. He told me to toss the diet pills or next time I might not be so lucky.
I was kept in the hospital for almost 10 hours, given 3 or 4 IVs, potassium, juices, and monitored (by the EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate machines) every 15 minutes.
Please take my story as a warning. If you seriously want to loose weight there are better ways (I know because I've lost weight after this)
The quickest way is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohol, and sodas.
Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.
In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)
Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.
Eat 5 times a day. A small breakfast. A mid-morning snack, such as an apple. A small lunch. A mid-afternoon snack, such as carrots. A lite dinner. Do not eat any later than 7pm (6pm is better.)
Go exercise for at least an hour a day, incorporating weight training. Weight training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat. You get the idea. It also gives tone and definition. Also do a few yoga and pilates exercises to help tone those hard to reach and stubborn areas.

QUESTION:
are weight loss pills safe and effective?
if they are okay, what kind? which brand? really works fast. any comments or suggestions?-
ANSWER:
one must try Hoodia Gordonii as supplemental foodstuff. Once you have figured which is the original and which is a cheap imitation, you may reconsider buying the original due to the fact that it is very highly priced. Once you have managed to cross that hurdle, you must follow whatever the product says. The price is remarkably high for Hoodia Gordonii for a reason. This plant is endangered and it will take about 5 years to be mature for this purpose. As an appetite suppressant, it works wonders and thus helps people to reduce their weights substantially.

QUESTION:
Is it safe for breastfeeding mom to take weight loss pills?
Well, my BMI has escalated to 32 and I'm wondering if it's dangerous to for a breastfeeding mom to take the weight loss pills. (breastfeeding exclusively until baby is 6months old).I intend to start shedding some weight at least a month after I give birth (in August). What are the dangers?
-
ANSWER:
It can be very dangerous! There is a lot of ingredients that can pass into your milk and not be safe for your little one.One of the great things about breast feeding is that you burn about 500 calories per day making milk. Keep your diet healthy and start walking or a light exercise when you are ready. Since your body uses a lot of carbs to help make your milk you may get a sweet tooth. Try and keep fruits around to help with that. The weight will come off. I had my son 3 1/2 months ago. I weighed well over 200 lbs before giving birth. I now weigh 165. I plan to breast feed till he is 6 months then I can do whatever to lose the rest of the weight. If you want to start an exercise routine after having the baby and are worried about the lactic acid that can move into your milk, just be sure to nurse right before you exercise, watch how your baby reacts and adjust your exercise accordingly. Talk with your obgyn at your check up and they can help you go over what is best for you and your baby.

QUESTION:
Is it safe to take pills for weight loss?
i know i should ask my doctor but, i want to know if prescribed diet pills are safe to take? has anyone out there took phentermine? does it work?-
ANSWER:
Weight loss pills fall into two main categories; prescription medications available from your health care professional and 'natural' over-the-counter preparations available from health food stores and other retailers. Many diet pills do actually work and are perfectly safe for most people to take but you should be cautious when considering either option. Many people choose to take 'natural' diet pills, based on the fact that a naturally occurring plant or mineral supplement will not harm them. One of the best natural diet pills is Acai Berry Boom. It is a dietary supplement that does not make any health claims directly, but rather suggests that by taking this supplement, you will experience the positive health benefits of the acai berry like more energy and a more improved state of health. Since very little, if any negative side effects have been associated with consuming pure acai berry and a pulp supplement form of this berry, Acai Berry Boom may be safely taken in conjunction as part of a healthy lifestyle routine.

I am thinking about using weight loss pills but I don't know if they are safe, or effective can you give me a list of safe and effective pills! THANKYOU!-
ANSWER:
Alli is FDA approved. It is not a stimulant so it will not cause heart jitters. It absorbs fat and if you keep your fat intake under 15 grams of fat per meal then you will not have any side effects. If you eat high fat foods you will get runny stools.... but only if you over eat.

QUESTION:
are Xantrax high potency weight loss formula pills safe in australia?
They say they are herbal so one would think it cant hurt but im not so sure, are they safe to take and what exactly is it they do? i am dieting and excersizing and i have been loosing weight should i continue taking these pills or should i throw them away? i have been taking them for around 3 days now and havent had any ill effects from them yet
for the record, i bought a treadmill today, i also do yoga and all star workouts daily, i eat around 1000 calories a day which is lower than the reccomended intake.-
ANSWER:
I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.
First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising...
This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart.
However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace .com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. Now this doesn't mean you have to follow my foot steps but I've successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.
Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate.

QUESTION:
Is it safe to take birth control pills with weight loss pills?
for example Slimbionic weight loss pills
I've tried exercising and dieting...but it does not help, so I'm thinking maybe I need something else to help me..
I've tried exercising with 3 different trainers with each of them I spent 3 months i wasted a lot of money and was dieting...but it does not help, so I'm thinking maybe I need something else to help me...I'm not on any pills right now.-
ANSWER:
Hard to say. A lot of these weight loss pills contain proprietary formulas, largely stimulant herbs that elevate heart rate. Health concerns related to the stimulants otherwise, you should know that there is VERY little research done on many herbs and their safety, much less potential interactions with pharmaceuticals - especially birth control (hormone therapy). The bigger question should be why you are considering weight loss pills when there are more tried, true, and safer alternatives out there. Weight loss pills are a billion-dollar industry based on false hopes and dreams. Not to mention that once you start taking the pills and lose weight, 99.9% of the time the weight comes right back, and you get stuck into this cycle of yo-yoing weight that you ultimately never win. BEHAVIOR modification is probably the only and best way to lose weight, barring genetic disorders. I strongly recommend you pursue that route. You will ultimately find it more fulfilling in the long run.

QUESTION:
Are there any good weight loss pills out there?
I'm looking for some safe weight loss products that really work.-
ANSWER:
In my opinion, NO -- they're all bad. I don't believe folks should ever rely on a "magic" pill to improve health/appearance. And Acai berries aren't the answer either, but thank goodness for that spam reminder! The only safe way too lose weight is to improve your diet and exercise regularly. Observe yourself for a couple of weeks and document what you're eating and how often you're exercising. Then make gradual changes to improve both. Also, take a more active interest in your health...read/learn more about nutrition and exercise. The more you understand these things, the more likely you will make better choices that you can sustain for life. Weight loss pills may provide a quick loss, but they will do nothing to actually help you improve your health.
